Title: I can't tell the difference between a hungry cry/tired cry
Post by: mommynow on September 06, 2005, 18:51:44 pm
When my daughter wakes up she sometimes she cries and sometimes she doesn't.  I can't tell if she is still tired or if she is hungry.  How do you know?

If you are following a routine like Tracy promotes then you should know by what time it is.

I would need more information to offer more advice - r you on EASY?   How long between feeds?  How old is your LO?

also if you have the original BW book it really describes all the different cries really well - if you listen closely you start to notice how accurate she describes them.  you just need to focus on them for a little and find the differences.

in this post i copied out the hunger vs. tired/overtired descriptions for someone else.

She is on 3 hour EASY and breastfed.  But I am worried she isn't getting enough to eat.  She started going from 6:30pm-6:30am without eating and that only left time for 5 feeds.  I don't do a dreamfeed because she has reflux and I worry that it will bring it on.

But we keep weighing her since her last appointment where she weighed 12lbs 3 ounces, she has only gained 6 ounces and it was 4 1/2 weeks ago.  Is that normal?

She is 3months

She will only nap for 45 minutes and wakes up crying.  I wonder if she is hungry.

When she just woke up after 45minutes she was doing the "cough-like" cry in the back of her throat.  It had only been 2.5 hours so I fed her and she only ate 10 minutes and fell asleep while nursing her.

How long has she been doing the 45min naps?

It sounds like she is waking up crying as she is still tired and the feed helped her get back to sleep.

How does she fall asleep for naps and bed?? eg: what does your nap wind down look like?

She started 45min naps about 5 weeks ago.

When she wakes up I feed her and then after about 1.5 hours being awake I swaddle her, go to the nursery and read two short stories to her while rocking.  Then I place her in the crib.  I reassure/soothe her until she is calm and then leave the room.

After 45 min or less she wakes up, usually crying.
