I have a 9 month old who wakes 2 0r 3 times at night. There is no pattern to his waking and I nurse him back to sleep. How can I break this habit without too much trauma to my baby?

My dd used to sleep through the night until we went on vacation this summer. There, she developed a cold and slight ear infection. She would wake up a couple of times during the night and I would also nurse her back to sleep. But when we returned home, she was no longer sick but continued to wake up a couple of times in the night. At first I would go into her room, pick her up and give her the pacifier. I had to use PU/PD until she go the picture that it wasn't time to eat. Soon, it was down to only one night waking. Then I read in Tracy's book that sometimes babies wake up during the night because they are hungry... why? because they don't get enough calories during the day. So I upped her ounces from 6 to 8 plus I 'cluster' fed her later in the day like the book says... I give her milk at 4:30-5pm and then some cereal or milk again at 6:30. And u know what? She is back to sleeping through the night! Try it! Good luck!

Did you find that she settled down with PU/PD?

My son just started accepting solids about a month ago, and only bite-size,not baby food. So perhaps he does need more calories during the day. I wil try that as well as pu/pd method as well. I have Tracy's new book so hopefully I can master it better. Thanks for the suggestions!

PU/PD helped a lot when she would wake during the night, plus she uses a paci so she would settle quick.. up and down maybe 2-3 times max.
