Title: Signing
Post by: Threadhead on September 26, 2005, 19:57:43 pm
I think there used to be a load of posts on the site about baby sign language, but I can find any now!  I have been using born2sign, but they dont always have all the signs I am looking for (most recently "wait").  DD (16 months) has started signing back now (doing bath, milk, cup and change).  I think she may have started before now if I had been a bit more consistent.  We are also signing raisins, more, shoes, biscuit (cookie), socks, although she is yet to copy these.

Has anyone got any info on any good sites?  And any other suggestions for everyday signs we can start using with DD?

Thanks

That is a website for American Sign Language, it has so many signs!

What I do for the sign for "wait" is to put my hands open in front of me, palms facing me, and wiggle my fingers.  Katelyn has used it a handful of times, but she does know what it means

Oh, I'm so excited, finally Katelyn has been doing the "I love you" sign :D  :D  :D

check out http://www.signingtime.com.  they have the most AWESOME videos, a little expensive, but still great.  my kids (2, and 5 mo.) love them, and they have loads of helpful signs.  my 2 year old hardly tantrums at all and probably knows over 400 signs.  he tells me he is "grumpy" "sad" etc.  he has tremendous language skills--very advanced for his age--and yet he still loves to sign.  he also makes great eye contact with me (which, i think comes with signs) when we speak.

Thats great ladies - thanks a lot.  I had looked at the commtech site when i first thought about signing and somehow lost the link to it.  Its safely in my bookmarks now though!

I forgot CBeebies has the signing guy - however, since we only have "paupers telly" (ie, just the 5 channels, LOL), I've only ever seen him at friends houses.  I cant remember what he looks like, but managed to figure out which icon to click!  Will have a proper look at it tomorrow.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Sorry nuggets - I didnt mean to ignore your post - just very tired and on my way to bed.

Its great that your son knows so many signs.  Also, pleased to hear that his speech is fantastic (heard conflicting advice about whether signing would improve speech), and also that he has good social skills, by that I mean the eye contact.  Can you give an example of what other signs he is using?

I am going to teach my older kids (7 & 9yo) "hurry up" and "get out of there" so I dont have to shout at them all the way home from school every day!  Also going to start please and thank you with DD (she already says thank you verbally, but there is no harm in reinforcing this, I suppose.

Thanks again for the posts.

Nikki - Maybe you could post an announcement with the links for signing?  They do tend to come up a lot and this way people could just read the announcement to get the info...?

This all sounds very promising! I have just started signing with my daughter and she just looks at me funny. We have started with more and milk for now.

I bought Babywise by Gary Ezzo a while ago and the only thing I found useful was the signing section in the back of the book. Ezzo also mentioned it was a good idea to teach signing so that you could discreatly remind your child to say thank you or please, or "you are in BIG trouble when we get home!"

hi all,

i don't have any DVD's or books on signing, just using the website videos to learn. i had a dumb question- my ds is pretty young (6mo) so i'm going at it slow, but are you supposed to only do one sign at a time until they get it, then move onto another "word"? or can i sign for "milk" and later for "eat" and again for "more" even if he hasn't mastered any of these?

btw my dh was like, "what the heck is with the sign for 'daddy' ". ha!

Hi selena - my dh was the same about the daddy sign.  hehehe.

When we were starting signing, we went for about 5 at first - milk, more, bath, cant remember which other ones we did to start with.  Then we added in other words as they became relevant.

At first it was hard to be consistent and ALWAYS sign when we said the words.  We still dont ALWAYS sign, but we are getting better.

I think at 6 months, she's probably not going to "get it" and sign back, so dont be discouraged - just keep at it.  The first time she signs back, you will probably phone everyone you every met to tell them how clever your lo is!
