Title: How do you know when to transition to one nap?
Post by: dmills on September 29, 2005, 19:31:42 pm
Another question...How do you know when to transition to just one nap.  My 12 month old ds wakes at 6am usually and is ready for an hour and a half nap at 9am and then another hour and a half to 2 hours around 1:15 or so.  How will I know when to switch it up?

I figured it out when his naps changed. He started waking after an hour for the second nap instead of napping for 2 hrs. So I just kept him up as long as I could one morning and then put him down. He slept 2 hrs, his normal nap length. The first week wasn't fun, he was cranky and had an earlier bedtime. (Funny how they always wake up at the same time) Slowly I worked him back to when his second nap should have been, and slowly he started sleeping longer. He now takes one 2.5-3 hr nap, starting at 1, and he wakes at 6:30am. HTH

I knew ds was ready for one nap when his am nap was being pushed later, and he started refusing his pm nap.  He was around 13 months old when we made the transition.  I just picked a time in between the 2 naps, for us it was 11-11:30 and put him down for the one nap then.  I also brought his bedtime up at the same time.

I knew when Tyler started consistently playing through one of his naps. On the odd occasion that he did take both, he was a bear to get to bed that night. His naps had also shortened to 30 min each. He went through a few phases when I thought he might be ready, but we finally made a successful transition to 1 nap at 13 mo. HTH!

I have 13 month old twins.  They usually nap for 1 1/2 hours in the morning, and 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours in the afternoon.  Sometimes they shorten the afternoon nap, particularily if I let then sleep a bit longer in the morning.

My pediatrician said that when they start napping for less than 1 hour, it is time to consolidaten the naps.  She said they need an hour to reach REM and resurface.

I do find sometimes (for the last few months) for a few days running one or the other seems to boycot the afternoon nap, fussing or playing for a while before settling, or waking up way too early, but I just carry on and it seems to go back to normal.  I hope to carry on with two naps for as long as possible, but I think most kids transition by about 18 months.

Sounds like your little one still has two great naps a day.  Congrats.

Thank you all.  It sounds like your little ones let you know when they were ready.  I guess I will leave things the way they are until my ds shows signs of changing.  Right now he hits the crib and is out for both naps.

We are in the thick of it w/ the 2 to 1 transition.  But DD is only sleeping 1.15hr (her normal am nap lenght - at least now i know it is normal).  She currently goes down at 11.30am (and 12.30 2 days a week for nursery days).  How long did it take you to get there (longer nap i mean).

other questions:
long is this going to take[/list:u]
I know i sound desperate huh?  Any advice apprieciated :?[/list]

With Hunter he refused to nap for his 2nd nap for 3-4 days, and was really cranky.  So we just decided to bite the bullet, even though I really needed him to take 2 naps (lol).
