Title: when drop a feeding (going from 4 to 3)
Post by: mommy2two on September 30, 2005, 01:49:39 am
My dd is 10.5 months old. We are on 4 hour easy and she has a bottle at 7am, 11am, 3pm and 7pm.  She eats solids at 8:30am, 12:30pm and 5pm. Lately she seems to be eating WAY less formula and at the 11am feeding especially. Sometimes only 1.5oz when she used to eat 3-4oz. (But still drinks 7 or 8 oz at her 7pm bedtime bottle) I was wondering when babies drop a bottle feeding? I know she is probably filling up on solids so this is why she is drinking less, but I want to know when I should stop offering her the 11am bottle.
Thanks!

It is perfectly ok to drop now.  Does she take a sippy or cup?  I give Zoe lunch with the sippy at 11 and a snack at 3 with the sippy.

HTH  :D

...wanted to add...you may notice a drop in formula but if they are good solid eaters they will eat until full so they sustain themselves.  :D

She will drink from the sippy cup, but gulps and ends up choking on the liquid (I put water in it). She will only drink from a sippy with a soft spout, not the hard ones. When you say you give a snack at 3, do you mean a liquid snack instead of the bottle? Would you mind posting your feeding schedule? Thanks!

Does she take milk from the sippy?

Here's our feeding schedule (all sippys are with formula - we use a straw cup):

7:00 AM - bottle of formula (4-6oz)
8:00 AM - solids(all finger foods....if she wakes at 7:30 on the days I don't work, I give her the sippy with her solids all at one time, this is the goal)
11:00 - Lunch...all solids, finger foods.....sippy(usually only takes an ounce or two...loves her food)
3-3:30.  Snack with sippy, usually an ounce or two
5-5:30  Dinner with the sippy
6:30 Bottle (9oz)

Overall...she gets about 15-20oz of formula a day. Not a whole lot but the ped was ok with it.  I don't feed her any purees anymore (haven't for 2-3 weeks) as she won't take it.  So maybe "real" solids fill her up more....

No she will not take formula from the sippy. I have tried. Also I am curious what finger foods are you giving her? Right now all she will eat are cheerios and grilled cheese sandwich and soft fruit. She is still on jar baby food too.  She is a picky eater.

I would try and work on her taking her milk from the sippy or cup. Normally when you drop a feeding it's combing it with the solids meal so she doesn't loose all of the ounces.  :D

I do believe that Zoe is not the norm with being on all solids and not purees so please don't feel that you need to be up to that speed  :D

These are the foods (that I can think of) so far:

Fruits:  banana, blueberries, raspberries, muskmelon, apple, peaches, nectarines, kiwis, pears
Vegetable:  beans, peas, broccoli, corn, carrots, spinach, potatoes, celery (I'm sure she'd eat sweet potato and squash, but i don't buy it  )
Meats:  fish(salmon and white), eggs, hamburger, turkey, ham, chicken
Breads:  toast, cheerios, crackers, pastas, waffles, gerber puffs for emergencies
Dairy:  cottage cheese, regular cheese (colby, monterey jack, etc.)

Noelle,

Does Zoe try to play with the straw?

We have taken the sippy cup away from my 3 yr old so I have him drinking out of the disposable cups because I really don't like the other straw cups available by playtex and gerber because they always leak in my bag or fridge. Chris the 12 month old wants the straw cups too but he pulls the straw out after a few sips and then plays with the straw and tries to get the milk or water to come out of the cup. I was thinking it would be great if he would just drink from a straw cup now.

I'm just curious what Zoe does with her straw cup?

Hi Minerva...
The only playing she does with the straw is maybe in her mouth    I use the Munchkin brand...and the straw can't come out/doesn't move (though it is flexible)..does that make sense?  I'm thinking you're using a different type maybe?  :D

Hi, there.  Sorry to butt in, but just wondering how you serve the cheese?  Small cubes or flat pieces?  TIA

Oh, and is it supposed to be the lunch hour bottle that you drop first?  I had planned to drop the one before dinner.

You're not butting in  :D

I serve the cheese half way inbetween chunks and slices..not quite thin but not quite too chunky  :D

There's really not right or wrong on which bottle to drop first.  I think dropping the one right before dinner is fine too.  I would just replace it with a snack and the sippy or cup  :D

Hi EasyMom,
My DS is 10 mos, and we just dropped from 4 to 3 bottles yesterday, so I was so glad to read this thread to get some info!

Our schedule now is
7 - bottle (he takes about 5 or 6 oz)
8 - breakfast (cereal with fruit, cheerios, sippy of water)
11 - lunch (fruit or yogurt, waffle?, sippy of water)
1 - bottle (5 or 6 oz)
3 - snack (cheerios and sippy)
5 - dinner (veggies, meat, sippy of water)
7 - bottle (7 oz)

He really hasn't increased the number of oz in each bottle since I dropped to 3.  Will it take some time for him to increase?

Also, does anyone know why a bottle is offered first thing in the morning instead of breakfast?

Hi Sheila...
You may not see an increase in the formula.  As they get older they transition from getting the calories/nutrition from the solids vs the formula  :D

Also...as far as the first bottle in the AM before breakfast..my opinion is that most babies take the first and last bottle better than the middle two and this way it is sort of a "guarantee" that they are going to get the formula/bm  :D

Thanks Noelle!  We'll keep at the 3 bottles and see how the next few days go.  Cross your fingers...   :)

sheila,
did you change the times of all your other bottles when you went from 4 to 3. Can you also list your nap times.
Thanks!

Hi!  Our schedule used to look like:
7 - bottle
8- breakfast
9:30 - nap
11 - bottle
12 - lunch
2 - nap
3:30 - bottle
5 - dinner
7 - bottle and bed

Now, our schedule looks like this:
7 - bottle
8 - breakfast
9:30 - nap
11 - lunch
1:30 - bottle
2 - nap
3:30  - snack
5 - dinner
7 - bottle and bed

Since we switched his 90 min naps have gone to about 45-60 min.   :(   But I guess I will just keep at it, and see how he does.

How is it going for you?!?

why do you think the naps got shorter? He is having a bottle before the 2nd nap, so you would think that would keep him from waking from hunger. Any ideas why this is happening? Also, what "snacks" are you giving him? Right now the only foods my dd seems to eat besides Earth's Best veggies in a jar are Yo Baby, cheese, grilled cheese, bananas, cheerios, cheese quesadilla and I think that is about all she has liked so far. Not exactly a balanced diet :). I try to make sure to give her veggies at every meal even if it is from the jar. A lot of times I have to add a little of the Yo Baby to the veggies to get her to eat them. This is a new thing. Since tasting all the other new foods, veggies are not as yummy I guess! Our current schedule looks a lot like your old one.

I don't know for sure why his naps are shorter, but he has a lot going on right now.  We are experimenting with weaning him from his reflux meds, he has thrush again  :( , and I think he is teething.  I think I will just stick it out for at least the next week and see how things go.

Hmmm, let me think of snacks he eats.  He loves those Gerber Banana Cereal Snackin Squarers, pieces of rice cake, pieces of pancake, cheerios, rice chex or crispies.  It is hard for me to make sure he gets a balanced diet also.  He gets some fruit with his breakfast cereal.  He also eats a ton of Yo-Baby Yogurt.  He likes watermelon, and loves eating fruit out of those net feeders.  To get veggies in him at dinner, I have to make sure I distract him with a finger food that he likes while I spoon in veggies.  For example, tonight he ate pieces of chicken and rice (most ended up on the floor) from our dinner while I spooned in a jar of mixed veggies.

So are you sticking with 4 bottles for a while longer?

the need to distract while feeding sounds familiar! My dd loves Yo Baby so much that when she refuses her veggies, I just hold the Yo Baby container in front of her while I scoop veggies from the jar on the counter and she eats them thinking I am feeding her the Yo Baby! I wonder how long till she catches on? It is so funny!!

Ha!  As long as it works, keep doing it!!!  To get DS to eat veggies, I scoop up the veggies in a metal teaspoon, and I tap the spoon on the edge of the jar.  So I go tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, and then put it up to his mouth.  He will instantly open his mouth for me!  Then I do it all over again.  I don't know if he is hypnotized by it or what, but it is so funny that it works!

Geez, the things we do to get them to eat...

that is so funny! You are like a magician. Tap Tap Tap and the baby opens his mouth.
