Title: Very confused on wake to sleep! Please help!
Post by: a_astorga on September 30, 2005, 21:30:51 pm
Hi,

My 8 month old son has started sleeping thru the nite for the past week.
I am really hoping this continues! However he wakes up at 5 am and its just so tiring waking up at that time, specially because I hear him cry once or twice in the middle of the morning for like 30 secs. and then goes back to sleep. But he already woke me up and I try to go back to sleep but keep thinking he's going to cry soon again. So anyway not sure if he needs more sleep, he wakes up fairly happy, talks to himseld for at least 15 mins then starts getting cranky I try feeding him but isn't hungry and he is still cranky, come downstairs and play and he is happier.

He usually naps his 1st nap after 2.5 hours after being up. 1.5 hour nap.

Has lunch and naps his 2nd nap after 3 hours of being up. 1.5 hours.

Then naps his 3rd nap after 2-2.5 hours of being up. 30 min. nap

Then bedtime at 6:30-7:00 the latest at 7:30.

However for the last week he has been getting up crying loudly like at 8 or 9 pm.(i guess its separation anxiety) Im with him for like 20 mins. then I put him down.

So, is this ok? Is it OK that he is getting up at 5 am or should I try to extend it by doing wake to sleep? And how is this done?

Thanks for reading.

Wake to sleep works by changing a regular night waking habit, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will work for an ealy waking if the total sleep needs are actually being met in a 24 hour period... so you have to shift the times of sleep. If your lo wakes from sleeps & is happy most of the time, then wake to sleep for a 5am start to the day, most probably won't work, as your lo is getting enough sleep each night, you will need to Tweek the day /night ratio.

I think in your case your lo only needs 2 naps/ day (age appropriate for a 8mo) & that would probably fix (in a week or 2) the 5am wake up.
Try to space the first nap to AT LEAST 3 hours after wake up, working towards 9.30/10am if you want a 7am start of day.
