have a baby food book which suggests these but have not heard of anyone using them, book suggests they are suitable from 4 months but am not sure

The new WHO recommendations is that babies not receive any solids until 6 months.
I know tapioca is a grain/rice and have used it in casseroles and desserts like rice.

sago ... it looks like rice. when it's cook, it's transparent and very soft and a little sweet. actually i think rice is much better on stomach than sago.

I get these yummy drinks that have tapioca balls in them often so I'm very familiar with it. Tapioca is a flavorless starch made from the cassava root. It's used primarily in desserts i.e. tapioca pudding and my drinks. Tapioca flour is used as a thickener like corn starch or flour. Not much nutritional value in it as far as I can tell so might as well just skip it. Give your lo something with more nutrition. Sago is pretty similar.
