Title: Should I do a dreamfeed?
Post by: bluehydrangia on October 06, 2005, 23:18:36 pm
My 16 week old daughter has her last bottle at 6:00PM, and then goes to bed between 6:30 and 7:00PM.  She wakes up anywhere from 2:00 -4:00AM to eat, and then goes back to sleep until 6:30AM when she's up for the day.  I'm wondering if a dreamfeed at 10:00PM might get her to sleep through until 6:30AM.  I know I'll never know unless I try, but I was hoping to hear from other dreamfeeders on their experiences.

Actually, I've always wondered the same thing. We do a DF with our 8-week old (textbook/spirited refluxer) but it doesn't seem to help. Her last bottle is around 6:30/6:45, bedtime about 7:30/7:45 and then we DF anywhere between 10:30-11. She is sound asleep at the DF and normally takes about 4 ounces (with coaxing) at the DF, as opposed to her usual 5-6 ounces. However, no matter how much she takes at the DF or what time we do it, she is back up between 2:30-3 (usually closer to 2:30).

Should we try skipping the DF and see what happens? Perhaps she would then still sleep till 2am or close and maybe she would take more at that time?

I don't mind doing the DF - just sometimes it seems to have no real effect?

As a BW...I've seen it go both ways.  With John it worked like a charm, and one day we just dropped it cold turkey with no problems (can't remember his age).

With Zoe, we did it from the beginning with always one night waking..which mind you is better than two   :D   At around 7.5 weeks, dh just didn't feel like doing it one night so I said let's just skip it and see what happens.  She slept all the way through and haven't had a night waking since  :D

In Zoe's case...I really do feel that the DF was more of an interruption, or that it was "reminding" her to wake up again.  I think it's best to go with your instinct.  Or just give it a try and see what happens...the worst being, probably an extra night waking.  HTH  :D

I think it worked well. We skipped the DF (so her last bottle was at 7pm, bedtime at 7:30, asleep at 7:40). She woke us up at midnight and hungrily drank 6 ounces and was back asleep by 12:40 (I think she thought it was a dream feed) even with a diaper change. She then slept until 5:15, with only a bit of stirring at 4:30, drank another 6 ounces and then slept from 6-7:30. Will try again tonight!
