My 14 month son is waking up at random times in the night crying out and seems to be so upset. He sometimes does this because he is overtired (if he missed a nap that day) He has a bit of a cold but seems fine during the day. Is possibly teething a bit. But the past few days it is nothing like I have seen before, or if I have it is not at all a common way of night waking for him. I am wondering if it is associated with a developmental waking. He has just started to walk, and of course everyone is excited. I would have thought that he would be waking up and walking around in his crib or something to this effect if it was a developmental waking, or can they be this traumatic??
Please help, I don't know what is wrong and I want to help my little one.

Is he getting molars? Those night wakings were like nothing we've ever experienced before. We were a wreck. Could also be developmental, though.

I love your daughters name!
Thank you for your reply. As of now he has only four teeth on the top and two on the bottom ( a very slow teether).
I guess it is possible, although that would mean that his teething pattern is out of wack. It should be the bottom two next. anything is possible though. I'll have a check.
I guess any developmental waking is like any other, so something eles must be happening !??
thanx for helping,
Melissa

It sounds developmental to me, but I could be wrong. I have read that when babies hit milestones, like walking, crawling, etc. that it can certainly disrupt sleep. It is such a huge developmental leap; he is now seeing the world on his own, and from a totally different vantage point, so his brain has a lot more to process. Just my two cents. I don't have a solution for you, except to try to wait it out. Maybe check out the topics under "Getting Back on Track" on the sleep boards? They list milestones as a reason for sleep disturbances!
Good luck to you!

also if i remembr correctly when they start walking they are using new muscles and it is very tiring for their body - when they rest sometimes their legs can feel funny, tingle, etc Maybe those types of things are waking him and upsetting him since it is unfamiliar and uncomfortable - this is all from memory so bear with me but you could ask your child nurse / ped. about it or look online further to see if my brain is still working well

Thank you all for your replys.
After a couple nights he seems to be much better.
What you all said makes a lot of sense. I'll check into it further.
