Title: Is there anyone there????
Post by: woopster on October 12, 2005, 20:58:07 pm
HELP!!
Why is the late evening feed so difficult??

During the day Lydia and Sam sleep great, during the night they sleep great.  The problem is the last sleep before 'bed'.
Lydia tends to cluster feed - not a problem, don't mind that.  However, these last 3 nights have been awful.
Tonight, L took 4oz at 5.10pm, didn't sleep, and then took another 4 oz at 7.40pm and is now (9.55pm) screaming for more food.
Sam took 6oz at 6pm, slept for 30mins and then took another 6oz at 7.55pm and is also upstairs screaming for food!

WHAT DO I DO???

Are they on a growth spurt? Liv was like this when she was little and it used to do my head in. I'd be crying my eyes out and DH would say it's feed time again and it just seemed like it couldn't be.

i agree - sounds like a growth spurt.  just keep tanking them up!

matthew's mommy has written many times that the catnap can be a "freebie" - get them to nap however you can - car, swing, stroller, etc. and it shouldn't affect other sleep training.

Hi Ladies,
Finally got them to sleep.
Lydia took 2 1/2 oz, and went off ok.  Sam took 3oz at 10.40pm and had to be rocked/patted/shh'd to sleep, and finally went off at 11.20pm.

Just curious, how old are they when it comes to sleeping?
They are actually 15 weeks old, but their corrected age is just under 4 weeks.
Do I treat them as newborns?  I do try and give them a bit of 'A' time, but how much is too much?

Thanks!

hmmm... i think you're supposed to consider them to be their corrected age???  in which case not too much A time.  maybe an hour total?  worth a shot anyhow.

Hi Wendy I agree about the age thing (although never been there personally)

Do you mean how old are they when they sleep through? If so I'm not the best person to ask on that one as Liv has a milk allergy that was only "officially" diagnosed at 6.5 months and then we had a nasty habit to break.

My newphew slept through from 8 weeks and another friend's dd from about 12 weeks.

Hiya Sara,
The question was more age related sleep cycles, if that makes sense?
I'm just grateful they sleep as long as they do!

Hmmm, I think that the growth spurts and everything else is "calculated" from corrected age, so if yours are just under 4 weeks CA it could be the 3-week growth spurt, at least in Lydia's case. And since they're not identical, it'd be less surprising for them to follow slightly different patterns from each other.

Am I making sense? Hard to tell these days... LOL

Oh, and I would probably give them a  total Awake time no more than an hour, including feeding and changes for a while yet.

Yep, agree with the others. Age is calculated from "corrected" age according to sleep experts. So no wake time more than an hour for now.

You're doing great!! Grats on getting them to sleep so long!!

Hi Wendy, agree with the others on the sleep cycle. No more than an hour.

No more than an hour.

Would somebody mind telling them that please???!!!

They have both been awake since 8.40pm and have just gone to bed, 10.45pm.  <sigh>

To the person who said that it's ok for catnaps to be anywhere... we currently try to make the catnap for DD (two months, 3 days) in her stroller -which is a snap and go carseat thing... she's close to holding her head up and once she can, she will be able to use her regular stroller. She LOVES sleeping in her car seat and we allow her to for at least one nap a day since it helps her reflux and congestion. She still always puts herself to sleep in her crib for at least one nap a day and at night, so we are not concerned.

However, once we transition her from the car seat stroller to her regular stroller, do you think she will still like napping in there? I'd really like the last cat nap (usually from 5:45-6:30 or therabouts) to be somewhere other than the crib and she doesn't like to sleep in the swing - likes that as more of an awake time thing...

Oh Wendy, I totally know that child!! At that age I often resorted to taking Liv out in the car and let her sleep in the seat (in the cot!!) when we got back just to prevent myself from going absolutely crazy!! It does pass, our stage lasted three weeks almost to the day but it felt like 3 months.

We're here to keep you sane. Don't worry!

Marisa's Mom,

she may not like napping when it's not in the car seat, but if she's not that big she may well drop the catnap before she grows out of it!  they begin to want to drop it after 6 months - i think even my big ds was 6 months before he grew out of that thing!

and if she doesn't... well is there any reason you don't like the crib?

This may be a silly questions, but if you calculate age for premature babies, would you also if a baby is born later? For example if my dd way born 2 weeks after my due date, would things like growth spurts perhaps come sooner?

It's not that I don't like the crib. I just like one nap a day to be elsewhere - so that she is able to sleep places other than her crib for when I need to be out and about and/or away from home. We live in Manhattan and walk EVERYWHERE and sometimes are away going into a nap period... Right now she is very portable and I want her to stay that way!

She's pretty short but quite pudgy - my little butterball!

bgracebetty--

Yes. I believe that's so. Makes perfect sense to me anyway, although I don't have the research to back that one up. The most you can do is look at your own lo and see when she hit her growth spurts. If they were about a week sooner, then I'd say you can depend on that rule :)
