Title: wake-to-sleep problems
Post by: jaycee on October 14, 2005, 21:26:55 pm
Hi there

I'm writing this on behalf of my sister who is trying wake-to-sleep with her 11-mth-old daughter. She's been waking habitually at 5.20am for weeks, and they've tried wake-to-sleep for 3 nights without the "promised" success by waking her gently an hour before. She still wakes up at some stage around 5.30am.

Is this the right method for such an age? Should she still be swaddled at 11 mths? Should she try a dream-feed just in case it's hunger?

Any suggestions I know would be very much appreciated!

Thanks!

11 months old is too old for swaddling as they move too much. Also at that age they shoulf be able to go 10-12 hours between feeds so a df is not really a good idea.
Also a 5am ish wake up is actually very common & could be due to the bed time/ nap times being out of whack, or your neice being ready to go to one nap per day.
What is her routine like? I might be able to give some suggestions to help, as if wake to sleep isn't working, it could well be a day/night imbalance or she needs her bedtime adjusted.

Thanks for your help. The latest update is that after 4 nights of wake-to-sleep my niece has had two morning wakings at 7.00am, so my sister and husband are THRILLED. Thanks so much for your advice; we may yet need to come back to it if this little stage doesn't last.

Hi!

I'm having exactly the same problem with my almost 11month ds.
He wakes up anywhere between 5-6am!!  Every once in a while he would make it until 6am, and I just feel so pleased!!!

I only go in when he starts crying, about 15-20mins after he wakes. At this point he usually has a soiled diaper.  :?  I have no clue as how to deal with this... :?:

I tried wake-to-sleep a few weeks ago, for a couple of days, and it didn't work. He would still wake at his usual 5:30am, plus I would be EXTREMELY tired, since I had already been up at 4:30am...

Here's his schedule, I would appreciate any help:

As I said before, when I go and pick him up almost ALWAYS he has a soiled diaper-maybe this is waking him???
When it's too early, like today (5am), I give him a bottle hoping he would sleep a little longer. What usually happens, is he would cry a lot (before I give him the bottle); he stays awake a long time before falling asleep. Today he was awake from 5am-6:30am. Then he slept till 8am (today I let him, because it's sunday  :D ). Off course, this messes all his routine!

Anywhere between 5-6am - 6-7oz bottle (he won't drink more)
8:30am-7oz
9am-nap (1.25-2hrs)
11am-lunch
12:30-7oz
1:30/2pm (usually 3hrs after he woke from nap#1) NAP (1.5-2hrs)
3:30/4pm-snack
5:45pm-dinner
7pm-bedtime routine
7:20pm-7oz
7:30/7:45pm-sleep for the night

He only started sleeping through a few weeks ago. Basically when I weaned him off the breast-at 10 months.

Thanks so much for any help!!
Sorry for the long post.
