Title: changing a habit ...
Post by: jojo100 on October 21, 2005, 13:00:01 pm
hi girls - i am new here and hope for a little reassurance! my little boy is 12 weeks old and some nites will sleep from his 11pm dream feed until 7am. however over the past cople of weeks he has been waking around 4.45am and crying. when i go to him he is not interested in food and so what i have been doing is popping him in bed with me with a dummy to try to void him waking my 2yr old daughter. this is now becomming a habit - easiest way for me but i am worried about creating a long term problem! last nite we left him on and off crying for 45mins when he eventually resettled himself til i woke him at 7.15am. anyone experienced this and if so how long did it take for your lo to stop waking and crying? i hate leaving him to do this but feel if i go in to "rescue" him its probably not the best thing for him. any advice gratefully received!

JoJo I have had the same problem lately. Are you breastfeeding? I heard to let my husband go in and soothe him... instead of myself (food source) so we have tried that the past two mornings and it has worked. I guess he associates myself w/the day starting (?) bc he can never resettle himself if I go in there. I'm wondering if this will help his awakenings. I know that you said he wasn't interested in eating, and my son hasn't either but you could try and see if it works if you have the help.

That was me btw... last post. My son is 14 weeks old and also takes a dream feed at 11. Do you cluster feed at all? If not when is his last feeding?

hi  - no sadly not bf anymore  :( as became ill a few weeks ago and introduced a bottle to supplement him. he settled with this so much better than with my milk and so we decided we'd given him a good start to his life. i feed at about 7.00am 10.30am 2.30pm 6.15pm and 10.30pm so no i do not cluster/tank him up. think we may have to ride with it until he sorts himself out. his nap this lunchtime, usually 2 hrs was very broken with him waking and resettling himself - if he can do it then he must be able to do it at nite too! maybe tonite will be better! btw he is 12 weeks old now. good luck with yours and hope we get this problem sorted soon!

Yeah, you definitely want to avoid creating a long term problem out of a short term one.  And I think you'll be amazed at what a 2 YO can sleep through!  I would definitely NOT leave him to cry, as that causes a lot of distrust and problems in the long run.  If the wakings continue, I would give pu/pd a go.  There is a sleep interview at the top of this forum that you can read that explains it.  Just be consistent at whatever you try and know that you are teaching him a good skill!
