Title: Has he got wise already ??
Post by: Lindy Loo on October 24, 2005, 12:57:46 pm
Hi there

My 4 month old DS has started to crave attention it seems.  He was  always happy to play by himself on him mat/gym or in his ring (which he adores) but recently he's taken to crying if you put him down and leave the room.  I've tried going back into the doorway and letting him know Mummy is still here but it doesn't help.  I eventually have to pick him up and then he settles down.

Is he getting wise to the "if I cry I'll get a cuddle" already.  I've tried to leave him cry a bit but it's real tears though.  I don't know how to get past this ... is it just a phase that I need to ride out??

Thanks for any help you can shed.

I'm sure others will correct me if I'm wrong but I am sure he is not deliberately crying for a cuddle/attention.
Could there be the possibility of teeth or an illness? DD is always very "cuddly" when teething or ill. Perhaps he just likes being able to see you. Does he play happily while you are in the same room? Could you put his baby gym etc in whichever room you need to be in so he can see you?
How long has it been going on? Was there something that might have triggered this reaction? Is there anything else fgoing on in your lives, or any big changes that may make him clingy?

Hi H

Thanks for your suggestions .. it started when he had his cold and has continued since then- he still has some mouth ulcers.  He will play for a while when I'm in the room with him but it is fairly soon after that he wants entertaining or picking up.  Last night he improved a bit so like you say, maybe he wants cuddles with being a little under the weather still.

He's just starting to learn that you are a separate person and you might not always be there. He does not yet realise that if you walk away you will come back and that there is such a thing as the other room. This is perfectly natural and normal even for babies who aren't ill or teething. Lots of cuddles and ressurance and the phase will pass (eventually).

I am going through the same thing with my 7 month old.  First my excuse was that he was teething perhaps, now he's sick.  People around me and that voice in my head say I'm making up excuses and that he knows I will pick him up if he cries hard enough. He also cannot stay doing an activity for more than 5 minutes, even just sitting in one spot. If he is alone in the room he cries also. Help!

Hi - I've heard that 7-9 months is the typical separation anxiety time. One thing i found helpful was comforting at dd's level, so not picking up, but going down to her and distracting her. Also going out the room for short periods of time saying that you'll be back and then going and comforting her as above. Even elongated peekaboo can help!! Good luck  :)
