Title: Increasing fat in ds' diet
Post by: {{{Angela}}} on November 05, 2005, 19:00:17 pm
DS just got weighed recently and he has gained any between 14 and 16 months.  He's also dropped off the percentile charts in terms of weight.  The doctor said we should try to get him to eat more carbs and protein foods, and increase the fat in his diet.  DS loves his fruits and veggies, but doesn't eat much dairy or meat.  Does anyone have suggestions on how to increase the amount of fat he eats?  He does eat a variety of foods - chicken, ground beef, sausages, rice, pasta, breads, but just not in any great quantity.  He prefers his toast and pasta plain , so I can spread or mix anything to them, or he won't eat them.

The last 2 days I've been trying to encourage him to eat more carbs and meat, also in the hopes of keeping the food in him longer so he can absorb more - usually, when he eats a lots of fruit/veg, it just passes through him quite quickly.  The doctor said not to worry and I know I shouldn't (he grew 4 cm, and is developing normally physically and mentally), but I am anyway.   :?

Does he like yogurt? Henry would eat yogurt at every meal if I'd let him. I feed him yobaby to keep the sugar down - they seems fairly wholesome with a lot of fat. He also eats a lot of full fat string cheese and tortillas.

HTH!

Have you tried a milkshake or even the pediasure with a little icecream to make a milkshake?  I have thought about adding a little cream to Lindsey's yogurt if needed for more fat since most yogurt is low fat.  She is finally starting to drink milk a little better though.  Lindsey also likes the cheddar cheese cubes which are the full fat kind.  She also loves McDonalds cheeseburgers, I just cut them into little bit size peices for her.  I don't give them to her often but she really likes them.  You might could even do oatmeal mixed with milk and a little cream.  I think it only takes like a tbsp of cream to get a lot of fat. You also could maybe sautee his meat or pasta in a little olive oil or balsamic vinagrette salad dressing.    Hope that helps.

Patties cooked in a little olive oil, you could also give a flaxseed or fish oil supplement which has a lot of other benefits too.  Does he like fish?  Avocado is good too.  I give high fat, natural unflavoured yoghurt to Nathan every day and he also gets quite a lot of cheese.  I have started offering him some cheese if he's feeling hungry - because it's protein and fat it will give some longer lasting energy than a cracker which I had been giving.

Thanks for all the tips.  Xavier does eat yogurt for snack in the morning, about 1/4 to 1/3 of a cup of whole milk yogurt (3.25% fat).  I found some Meditteranean style yogurt at the grocery store today which is 10% fat, so I'll add a bit of that to his yogurt.  I've also started giving him cheese as a snack instead of crackers or wheat puffs (which he loves, but are only wheat and air).  I've tried making him smoothies with yogurt and milk but unfortunately that doesn't make him drink any more than usual.

He doesn't like avocados, but I bought one today and I'm going to make him some banana muffins and put that in too.  He eats the same meat as we do, so he does get some oil if I'm stir-frying.

Has anyone tried nut butters?  I think we're supposed to stay away from peanuts until at least 2 years, but what about almond butter or others?

Cant give you any more tips but would like to say please dont worry..Doctors all told me DD was too thin and I was always panicking trying to fatten her up. She dropped off the chart and had tests done but the conclusion was she is just a skinny minnie.. She is two and a half now and like a little pixie but absolutely fine. Im sure your little 'un is doing great.. especially with all the high fat foods. Wish i could go on that diet!!

I just wanted to let you know that we also have to work :(  at keeping our ds gaining weight normally. He is tall and thin and usually around the 50th percentile for weight.  As far as percentiles go he is doing good for the moment, but after we get through this recent onset of teething WHO KNOWS???? :(   Right now he is getting his one year molars, 3 at once so eating has been tough for him.  He had been eating well up until then, but now we have hit a rough patch and like you I worry.  I do give him 8 ounces of pediasure before bedtime, sometimes he drinks it all sometimes he doesn't.  But at least I feel like I am doing all I can for him.  If he'll drink the pediasure I'd give it a try.  My pediatrician also recommended Carnation Instant Breakfast, it has twice the protein of an egg, and mixed with whole milk will have a good amount of fat.  Our ds will not drink it, but yours might.  Good luck! :D

Hmmm..is the Carnation instant breakfast a drink?  I'll have to have a look at that next time we're out shopping.

Well, DS refused to eat anything but green beans for supper tonight  .  Really, I think he was switched at birth, am I actually related to this child?  Not that I don't like my fruits and veg, but I also like my meats and carbs and fat. :)  I think we need to trade diets. :) :)  I managed to get some chicken into him while he was distracted and he ate a little bit of cheese but no way was he having any bread.  In the end, he ate some goldfish crackers and then dessert = a ton of watermelon. *sigh*

Yes it is a drink.  It comes in powdered form and you mix it with milk.  I actually drink it myself when in a hurry.  Many different flavors - chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.  Its relatively inexpensive compared to pediasure.  Sounds like dinner didn't help matters!  The little buggers!  Good luck! :D

We've done nut butters, usually spread on waffles, toast, sandwiches, etc. Almond butter is yummy but usually expensive, cashew butter is pretty good too and not quite as pricey.
