Title: Big bed Transition
Post by: janelle on November 15, 2005, 07:08:25 am
As I posted previously, we have set up LIana's big girl bed in her room.  Her cot is also in there and we have been giving her the option of where to sleep.  It has gone something like this:
DAY 1:  Slept in bed at night happily, climbed out twice and needed help to get back in.

DAY 2:  Napped happily in bed but ended up on floor for 2 of the 3 hours    Night cried at the mention of bed, slept in cot.

DAY 3 and 4:  Cries at the mention of her bed saying no, no, no, I want cot!!!  Sleeps happily in cot.

We have not forced her into her bed at all, we play with in during the day, read on it etc.  I am wondering if I should get rid of the cot from her room so she has no choice but the bed or if this will cause problems.  I have a wonderful sleeper and don't wan to jinx it!

Any advice on the next step would be greatly appreciated :D

I would possibly try moving the cot out of the room and then popping her down in the bed with as little as fuss as possible.  Could it be the security of the sides of the cot that she's missing?  Could you not fit one of those guards to the side of the bed so that she cannot tumble out of her bed in the night?

As we're thinking about doing the same sort of thing very soon, can you tell me about the bed that you've moved her into - is it a normal sized single bed, or a smaller toddler sized bed?

Thanks, and good luck, i'm sure she'll settle into her bed and love it in no time xx

It is a normal sized single bed.  We have put a safety rail that covers probably 2 thirds of the length with a gap big enough for her to climb out of down the end and pillows and cushions along the wall so it is soft and cozy like her cot.

Harvey had his cot in one room and bed in the other. For a week we put him for naps everyday into his bed and asked if he wanted his bed when night time came. He soon got used to his bed and felt safe to sleep in there at night so then we took the cot apart.
He was 16 months old though so may have been easier because he was younger.

Also, during the naps i would have to stay in the room with my hand on his back until he fell asleep for day 1. Then just sit near his bed on day 2, and day 3 I waited until he was quite drowsy before leaving. On day 4 I waited outside his room. And then hey presto, I could just put him to bed and give him his kiss and walk out.
