Because without the entertainment, this kid's meals go down the tubes very quickly. We have an arsenal of little toys. Once he gets bored with one, we bring out another. And it's always better if my husband is there because he can entertain while I feed. But I just don't think it should be so hard??? Or is that normal?? I don't know why I have visions of a happy 9 month old eating his food. I thought kids were supposed to love food. This one needs a 3 ring circus just to get down a 4 ounce jar of baby food. Is this normal???

in order to keep DS in his highchair to finish his meal, we have a special video which record all his favourite music.
and i give him some plastic bowl with lids (different sizes) and spoons. this is his latest favourite game, put the lid/spoon on/in the bowl.
with all these, i can usually finish the meal quickly within 15 mins.

i thought i was the only one who had to do that! :roll: we basically have to give our dd a ton of toys. we give her one, she drops it, we give her another, she drops it....repeat 450 times. we only have to do this for the spoon fed portion of the meal...she eats the finger foods really well.

Susie-Q i am with you - i was going to post today about all my dramas trying to feed my 9 mo old - she will skip entire meals and then 2-3 meals later will eat well, but we still need the 3 ring circus - we give her bowls, plastic cutlery, baby food jars (her favourite meal toy ironically) We consider a 4 oz jar + finger foods a huge triumph and get so excited. it can take 30 min to do this though :cry:

I have to go to great lengths to entertain my 8.5 month old son throughout lunch ( for some reason breakfast and tea are fine). While his most angelic of angel babies -twin sister looks on bemused! Thankfully she is very very patient.
I have to wave a musical book about and keep the tunes flowing orhe freaks out!

We just got this highchair that has these toys sprouting from either side. Although we aren't using the tray yet as DD isn't doing finger foods, I hope this will keep her entertained when we do. But even if I didn't have those two toys (which she'll probably hate and demand new ones. :) ) if I get frustrated enough, I swear I will find a way to tie the toys onto that chair so they don't get thrown on the floor. You can designate a few toys for the highchair, and poke holes or whatever you need to do to secure them to the chair. Who knows if this would actually work, but I thought I'd throw out the suggestion anyway. :)

I have to say I do not entertain Gigi at all. I was really weary of starting that whole thing so when she is done, she is done. The only thing we have is music in the background; grown up not baby. I have to say she usually eats well. 100-125g of main and then fruit to follow.

Well dd is on a food strike at the moment and has been for 2 months so at the moment she "digs" for want of a better word with her own spoon. Between the age of 9 and 12 months I thought I would go mad with toys, my watch, the door stopper and thought if I had to sing the teddy bears picnic or the wheels on the bus one more time I would go insane, dinner was always the worst. Now I would happily sing, stand on my head whatever if she would just eat!

I didn't do much entertaining either. I'd give Tyler a spoon or bowl or something else eating-related to play with and learn about, but that's it. If he wasn't interested in eating, then the meal ended, even if he hadn't eaten much.

Well - i'll give an update - we are doing generally really well with the solids now - i continue to give her things to hold to keep her hands occupied (spoon, bowl, baby food jar/tin, etc) and have relaxed a lot and like magic over the past week we have such less drama.
