Title: How long does it take for you to feed your baby solids?
Post by: a_astorga on November 28, 2005, 23:38:52 pm
Well with Georgie boy here it can take up to 45 mins. He is always sleepy when hes eating, needs all kind of entertaining and is usually a grump. Takes about 30 mins for me to feed him plus another 10-15 min for finger foods.

Is this normal? Should it be faster? It's lumpy food so he takes a while with the chewing and the gagging.

When my DS will take solids (which is not every day), he wants them fast, fast, fast!  If he's not in the mood to eat for whatever reason (teething, has a stuffy nose, etc.) it can take a long time.  I end up giving up because he gets so fussy and I don't want to create a battle over food.

How old is your child?

Have you figured out why he is so tired for eating?

Anyway, my little one is 10 months old.  When I spoon feed her, it can take anywhere between 10 and 20 mins.  I read on one posting to try to enjoy and cheerish the time together by talking.  (I often prepare my lunch and breakfast and eat with my daughter).  Once I started finger foods, which I offer first, I allowed around 20-30 minutes just for the finger food.

Allow a lot of time for eating.  Read some posted schedules for ideas too.
Hang in there.

I remember that Tyler used to take FOREVER. It literally seemed like all his activity time at that age was spent in the high chair or sucking down a bottle. Hasn't changed much, either...he still goes through phases where he eats a ton of food and eats it SLOOOOOW. Just this morning, he spent an entire hour eating his breakfast (all finger food, which he's an old pro at by now), eating the whole time but slower than molasses. Each baby has their own pace, and some just like to take their own sweet time! If it's ever pretty obvious that he isn't interested, I end the meal.

I found both my kids ate quite quickly when I was spooning it for them (ie under 1yr old), once Nathan got independent it can take up to an hour for mealtime to be complete.

Thanks for your input,

He does want to eat his food cause he opens his mouth but just seems really bored and starts rubbing his eyes, but as soon as he's out of the highcahir he's very happy playing.

My DD is a little baby bird.  Always opens her mouth and hasn't refused a food since we started solids.  It's amazing.  Sometimes she's not in the mood to eat much, but when she is it can take only 5-10 min total.  Of course we aren't doing finger foods yet.  I'm sure that will be a long process.
