Title: What to do after your baby vomits?

Sorry this might be a silly question, but it's almost 11pm here and I have no one to ask around  :?

I'll try to give you all the background of the story...

DD will turn 7 months tomorrow and she's been eating solids since 1.5 months.

This morning I offered DD prunes for the first time. When I introduce her to new fruits, I do it in the breakfast and I usually mix it with the cereal to see it she likes it. We had no problem... she ate it all (about 4oz)

During lunch, she had some fish with tomato puree and pumpkin with apples puree. She had tried this meals before, so everything went fine.

She had stool by 4 pm and when I changed, I noticed that she had developed a wild rash. Poor DD's skin looked almost flourescent red. I changed her and put some soothing cream, but she ot pretty cranky, up to the point that she could only take a late afternoon nap.

Dinner time. She had stuff that we have already tried and she ate it all. She had almost 8oz of milk and I put her in her crib. Suddenly, I heard her coughing in a strange way, followed by a strange cry, so I rushed to her room only to find her in a pool of vomit. She was pretty scared and I decided to give her a bath to clean her and calm her down, and in the way to the bathroom, she vomited again (it was a lot, and I have never seen her vomit like that).

So she calmed down after the bath, she wasn't cranky anymore and she had around 4 oz of water before going to sleep. I didn't want to give her milk because I don't know if it's oing to upset her stomach even more.

So what should I do now? Since she vomited all her dinner, I am quite sure she will wake up in the middle of the night hungry... should I give her milk? Should I take her to the doctor tomorrow? Should I check her temperature during the night?

I am quite confused.... I am a first time mom living abroad (I don't have my Mom to call at any moment) and I am not sure what to do...

It sounds to me that it could be a reaction to the prunes, but I am quite scared that she had fish and it could be something worse, mostly  because of the proyectile-style vomit... food poisoning maybe?

I would greatly appreciate your advice!!

Joey has vomited twice in his life - both time it was a violent intolerance to medication (which incidentally were meant to settle his stomach, yay reflux).

My sister is a mom of 3, and she explained it to me like this: when a baby vomits, it is because their body isn't tolerating something.  They will vomit until it is out of their system.  It sounds like your LO did exactly this.

When I asked the ped., they agreed with what my sister says.  Once they seem settled, it's been recommended to feed them an ounce at a time, to see how they handle it.  With it being the middle of the night and her already being relaxed, I would tend to think that your LO will take what she can handle.

If anyone else has more experience or knows something I don't, I'm sure they'll post.  HTH

Joeys's Mom,

Thank you so much for your advice. I t was quite re-assuring that she's not having anythin outside this world...

So we had quite a good night -she only woke up at 2.30am- and slurped her bottle without any issues. Yesterday she ate quite well and didn't have any further issues. The only remaining problem is her extremely sore butt, but I hope it will heal soon.

Glad to hear bubs is ok. If she has a really bad nappy rash, we have a cream here called Daktozin - hope you have it there too because it's really, really good and clears up a rash very quickly.

Thanks for your concearn.... I haven't heard about that cream, but I will ask the Ped about it.

Usually what does the trick for us is Canesten (basically it's fungus cream) mixed with her usual nappy cream (I use the Avent one), but right now, she won't stand anything to be rubbed against her skin, so the only thing I can put on her is baby talc.

If she needs to be wiped, I have to put her under running water.. otherwise she'll scream in pain...

I am hoping she gets better soon.
