Title: Crying in sleep - is this normal?
Post by: Seems on December 24, 2005, 09:25:27 am
My baby boy was 5 months old yesterday and for the last couple of nights has developed some really odd behaviour during the night.

He goes to bed at 7pm ish and we feed him again at 10.20pm ish.  Usually he will then go to sleep and wake anywhere from 5am ish but will often settle himself back to sleep by crying for few minutes and falling back asleep on and off for the next couple of hours before finally getting up at around 7am for a feed.

But, during the last few nights he has been crying at around 1.30am on and off until about 3.30am.  Each crying phase might be just a few seconds but some last up to 3 or 4 minutes and then stop.  The first few nights he did this my husband and I went to check on him to make sure he was OK but found that he was actually still asleep and had his eyes closed.

We are now really worried that our little boy is upset or in pain in his sleep and don't know what to do or how to help.  Should we wake him to comfort him or leave him?  Should we also keep going in to check on him and risk waking him (which we have done a couple of times and then its really hard to settle him back)? Also, we are worried that this is this the start of some long term sleep problem.

Also, have no idea if this is linked, but we have just begun to wean him - but he is only taking one cube of fruit / veg puree after his 11am feed and a teaspoon of baby rice and one cube of fruit puree at 6pm so not sure these tiny quantities can be making the difference?  Could this be causing wind in the night and thats whats making him cry?

Has anyone else exprienced this and is this normal or something we should be worrying about?

Many thanks for your your help!

Hi, our DS started having night waking/crying when we started solids early (and again at 6 mos).  Since your LO is still young you might try going two days without and if the crying stops that would be a pretty good indication -- it might be that it would be better not to have solids in the evening until his body is a bit more used to them.  I think there is so much going on around this time with development, teething etc. it is really hard to tell.  Good luck.
