Title: Been ill now night times are horrendous - PLEASE HELP
Post by: Bec.D on December 31, 2005, 10:12:33 am
Hi

My DS has had a pretty rough time recentley.  He got bronchiolitis just before Christmas and spent a night in hospital (only getting to sleep at 3.30am which I think is the start of the problem).  He got rid of that then became ill again on Wednesday - this time tonsillitis.  He is 7 months old.  He is now almost back to his old self, really smiley and happy during the day.  He has started taking milk (not as much as before though) and has started eating solids (again, not as much as before).

We have tried to keep his bedtime routine of bath, bottle and bed but this is a struggle.  He falls asleep (usually on me or DH whilst feeding or nursing) then as soon as we lie him in his cot he starts crying.  There was an improvement last night, I managed to settle him by patting his chest.  He then woke at 10.30pm and nothing but milk would settle him (3oz).  Then he woke at 2am and had 4oz.  He woke again at 4.30am.  Nothing atall would settle him.

He just seems all over the place at the moment.  Is it too early to expect his night sleeping to improve?  Do you think he is waking because he is hungry and his stomach can't take too much in the day?

Please can someone give me any advice and/or reassurance?
My little boy has changed so much :-((

Just a thought- I'm not sure of this so I'm just throwing it out there-
maybe his tummy got used to not getting as much when he was sick, and now he's trying to get back to where he should be.  I imagine it would take a little time.
Do you have a set schedule during the day- as far as always wake @
same time, and always go to bed around the same time in the evening, and have pretty similar schedule throughout the day?
Also, how is the daytime sleep?  That can have a big affect on nighttime as well.
But yes, they will make up for nutrition during the night if they don't take enough in the day.
Hang in there!

Hi

I have tried to stick to the same routine - especially night time where I do wind-down time then bath and bottle.

I think you are right, he seems to still struggle with eating solids so obviously is still hungry in the night.

Just hope he can get back to where he was - he ate anything put in front of him!!!  It's horrible to see him off his food.

Also the sleepless nights are really tiring me and my DH out!!!

Thanks for your reply.
