Title: 6 mo old-- a little underweight and question...
Post by: mstormin on January 04, 2006, 15:10:01 pm
Hi there.
We brought DS in for his 6mos old apt.  He'd gained less than 1lb since his last visit 2 months earlier!
The doctor was not too concerned b/c he's begun crawling so apparently when babies learn a new trick they'd rather explore than eat, plus he's using alot more calories now that he's mobile.
We started him on rice cereal right away in the morning and at night.  I'm also clusterfeeding and df to help him get the calories he needs.

For the past 4 nights when he's woken in the middle of the night (btwn 3- 4:30am) and I've feed him one side (I BF).  I always first try the nuk to see if that will make him content, but it doesn't work.

I'm concerned b/c I want him to get the calories he needs, but I also don't want him to always wake in the middle of the night-- I'm worried I'll start a bad habit that I can't stop.

What are your thoughts?  If I continue to give him MOTN feedings, when should I stop?  Or will he do this gradually himself?

TIA!

Hey there!! How did he respond to the intake of the rice cereal? You could really start introducing more foods now if you feel comfortable. You could try baby oatmeal or barley cereal and perhaps some fruits or veggies?

If you need some guidelines as to how much to introduce or what to introduce, please feel free to PM me.

Just a suggestion when introducing new foods, always start with the first and second feeds of the day as that way if he has a reaction (tummy ache, gas) it will have worked itself out by bedtime.

my almost 7.5 mo started a feed in the middle of the night once he got mobile.

If it is just the one feed & it is a single side, then  try to keep it as short as possible. Once you get 3 solids meals established if he is still waking then I think it could be a problem, but as he could be having a growth spurt & solids are just being started, I think it may just be 'transitional' but make sure you keep the night feed as small as you can.
