Title: Strawberry danger?
Post by: ~BeckyD~ on January 07, 2006, 15:30:33 pm
I am beginning to expand the variety of fruit and veg in Jacks diet and was thinking of introducing pureed strawberry but someone mentioned they heard that it should be avoided until a certain age, does anyone know if this is true?

I have heard that strawberries tend to cause more allergic reactions and to wait on them and citrus. Not sure why, but I would wait. I think it is a year, but I'm not sure.....maybe someone else knows.

What other fruits have you tried?

It's recommended that you hold off on introducing strawberries and all citrus fruits until at least 1 yr of age, like Caeden's Mama said.

They do have different 'rules' in the UK, not that this means our babies are any different!!! I never pureed strawberries for Ruby, but she did have them as finger food from when she was about 9 months old.

With Red, who is a similar age to Jack, i have done apple, pear, banana, blueberry and peach. Veggie wise we have done sweet potato, regular potato, butternut squash, carrot, brocolli, parsnip, and i am about to try cauliflower, spinach, peas and green beans. Oh and swede too.

I was wondering about melon?? Do you think it would freeze??

Clair i have pureed and frozen cantaloupe melon with success.

with strawberries and other foods they tell you to hold off on (like eggs and peanut butter) it is generally because they are the highest allergy rated foods and the longer you leave them out of your lo system the better the chances of not having any reaction to them. the reason most people start with pears is because it has the lowest rate of allergies etc. so it is a safe bet for 90% of kids to eat it and be ok.

John did have a reaction to strawberries when he first started eating them.  He would get rashy around his mouth and bum.  He still does now if he eats a lot of them at once.  But he loves strawberries.

Hi I may sound ignorant, but does this include giving your lo strawberry yoghurt?

It is the first I have heard about strawberries, and have been giving my lo strawberry yoghurt for about a month now - should I stop?

You can give 'cooked' strawberry from six months and raw from nine. I steamed strawberries and mixed them with apple from six months. No reaction. Same goes for yoghurt.
