Title: Adding solids = snacking??
Post by: momtoelise on January 11, 2006, 20:36:00 pm
I'm currently feeding solids to my dd twice/day immediately after she nurses - see typical day below...

7:30 am - bf
11:00 am - bf, solids
3:00 pm - bf, solids
6:30/7:00 pm - bf
(currently phasing out df - now at 8:45 pm)

I've been feeding solids right after nursing because I want her to mainly fill up on the milk.  I know Tracy recommends spacing the solid feedings out differently, but I'm wondering if that would encourage 'snacking.'  Anyone have thoughts on this??

Also, when I add a third feeding of solids, would it be best to do it after the morning nursing, or around our supper time (6:30 or so) & then do the last bf a little later?

Thanks for any input!!

my ds#2 is a week or so younger & I have him on 3 meals as of last week...
I bf on waking 7ish, then solids about 7.30/8am,

then the rest of the day tends to need to be structured around a mix of his needs & my toddler's needs,
 bf about 10am
 solids at noon
 bf at about 3pm
solids at 5/5.30pm
bf at 7pm
& often one at night... I don't df, I let him take the lead on when it is.

his meal times/feeds now resemble the times my 2.5yo has his meals & snacks so I kind of think I will keep it that way, I also offer about 30mls (1oz) of ebm in a cup at lunch & dinner time solids.

Thanks Katet!
Anyone else have thoughts on if spacing out the solids leads to snacking?  Or when would be the better time to introduce the 3rd feeding of solids in the day?

IMHO, spacing out the feeds may lead to snacking, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Keep in mind that babies' and toddlers' tummies are still very small and they digest food very quickly. It's often not realistic to expect toddlers to eat 3 meals a day like adults do. Most toddlers I know eat 3 meals a day with the family (breakfast, lunch, dinner) then a mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack. So for most toddlers, they end up eating 5 small meals a day, and that's okay.

The main advantage of spacing out feeds at your LO's age is that most babies just don't have an appetite after taking a full bottle or nursing. Waiting a bit ensures that they've filled up on the good stuff but have built up a small appetite for some solids. Of course, this doesn't work for everyone, so it ends up being whatever works for you and your LO!

hi,
I found feeding Jake In the BW advice i.e Bottle @7am, solids @ 9, bottle @11, lunch @12 etc, etc, made Jake display all the signs of "snacking" short naps, night waking etc.
So I have put all his milk feeds and solids together.ie b'fast @ 7, bottle about 7.45, lunch@ 11.45 bottle @ 12.15 etc.
This works out much better, and of course means I can get a break for longer than 2 hours! That sounds selfish, but I have 2 other kids, and a part time job!

My pediatrician suggested I breastfeed on one side or half a bottle, then immediately do solids, followed up by bf on other side or second half of a bottle. This helps keep my girl on her routine and she still takes plenty of milk.
