Title: How long do you let your 2 year sleep for????
Post by: janelle on January 31, 2006, 08:00:33 am
My dd is a champ at napping - most days :) and she goes down for bed at night no worries, quite enthusiastic about the whole process actually ::)  She has started waking earlier in the morning and I am just wondering if mayvbe she is sleeping too much during the day, because even with early wakings she still gets a heap of sleep.

Most days she will go down for a nap at 12:30 and then is up around 2:30 but some days like today she sleeps until 4:00 :o  Absolutely wonderful for me!!!  Hernight time sleep is going from 12-13 hours down to 10-11 hours when she has the early wakings.  Still a good amount I know but she has always slept more than the norm.

Do you think I should wake her when she has these long naps or just let her go for it and enjoy it while it lasts.  Do you think the early wakings are a result of too much day sleep???

Thanks ;D

I normally let my dd have a maximum 2 hours nap mainly because she has her lunch after her nap and I dont want her eating her lunch too close to her dinner time!!  She has a nap from around 12.30pm and it can be anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours.  I would definitely think that at this age too much daytime sleep would interfere with the amount of nightime sleep.

I would probably wake her after 2.5 hrs.  :)

It's taken alot of experimenting, and I'm sure it will change again of course.  But right now at 2.5 Kate sleeps about 11 hours at night (I put her down at 8:30, but she takes atleast an hour before she falls asleep, and then she is up by 8:30ish)

Her naps are usually about 2 hours.  If she is still sleeping I wake her up at 2.5 hours to protect bedtime because she naps later in the day, I put her down at 2:30 (again it takes awhile for her to fall asleep, she plays in her bed) and get her up by 5:00/5:30.

this seems to work best for her.  I've tried moving her naps earlier but then she doesn't sleep.  So all in all she gets about 13 hours a day.

I could have written this post.
Thomas is almost 26 months....in my eyes JUST 2.  Nap usually begins around 12:00 - 1:00 and can last for up to 3-4 hours long. A short nap is 2 hours a long nap is 4 hours.
At bed time there is no struggle. Bed is 7:30-8:00 at night. Thomas will sleep untill about 6-7:30 depending on the day.

Here is what I am thinking about these days with naps and sleep and such.

I want to get him a big boy bed. I was thinking of cutting the naps to 2 hours so that bed time at night will not be a problem with getting in and out of the bed because he will be so tired. NOW if only it were that easy.LOL

Thomas loves to sleep. will actually tell me.....mommy I tired.  However that said...... he has also been fighting the time that nap is starting at. There was a 3 day period where he didnt want to have a nap ( to much going on to sleep on these days) One day he actually didnt nap at all. I am NOT ready for the naps to stop. Thomas does still need them. After that 3 days we are back on track to reguar naps.

I am thinking it is time to start monitoring the naps lengths. But like you I enjoy the time.

Are you planning on moving your lo's into big beds yet?

I always wake Myles up after 2-2.5 hours.  I don't know how long he would sleep if I let him, but he has alot of energy so needs alot of wearing out!

Mommy4life, my dd has been in a big bed since around 22 months (but she doesnt nap there!!)  For her nap, she either goes to sleep in the car while we are out and is transferred into her bed when we get home or she goes to sleep in the buggy when my mum has her the two days I am working. (Bad I know but it doesnt affect her ability to sleep at night)

We had a week or two of visits at bedtime and through the night but she is now going through a good phase of us not hearing/seeing her in the night at all (I've probably jinxed it now by writing that!!).

Take care

I jinxed myself....Yesterday Thomas didnt have a nap at all and today he was up at 6:30 am and was napping by 10:45am
I think we are slowly entering the time that we will be fasing out naps.....I emphasize slowly. The days we are home he seems to require less nap times. Perhaps because the days are very relaxed. The days that we are out and about and having more activity he seems to nap fine.

I suppose I should enjoy these last months of napping still. These days will be fast gone soon....boo hoo.

mmmm... thats what I was thinking!  I have been waking her after 2.5 hours and putting her to bed 30 mins later and she has been sleeping better at night.  The couple of times I haven't woken her she has had really restless nights.  So I think I will start to monitor her nap length :(

Mommy4life - We moved dd to a big bed about 3 or 4 months ago becasue I need the cot for the new baby.  It took about 1 week for her to transition and we've had no problems since!
