Title: Cereal in bottles
Post by: colenliam on February 06, 2006, 03:07:15 am
Hi,
I have writing other post about my ds spitting up lots but I had heard that adding cereal to there bottles would help.  I am waiting to get a call for my appointment with my ped, but should I try to add some rice cereal to his bottles, see if it helps.  And if I do how much should I add.  Right now he eats about 1/4c Cereal in AM and same at night as well as 2Tbps of Veg at Lunch.  He only takes between 4 and 6oz every 4 hours of formula.  I just don't want to over feed him as well.
If anyone has tried this or knows anything about it, it would be great to hear from you.
Thank you

Hi,
I have had trouble like that too, I have come to the conclusion that he is just a sicky baby. My Health visitor said its nothing to worry about and it will pass, it is starting to get better now i must admit, he is almost 6months and since he has been on solids that has definately helped. I have always been told never to put the cereal in with the milk, so I never tried that. Instead of giving him full feeds all the time i would feed him little and often, but now he seems to be getting over it. Have you changed his formula recently? If you have any luck with this, let me know the secret!

Bev x

My ds has reflux, and we added a bit of cereal to his bottles to help him keep it down from the time he was about 2 months old or so. It helped a lot - but start very small to make sure he does ok with it. We never added more than about a teaspoon and only in every other bottle or so. If you decide to try it I would start with half a teaspoon or less.

I did it for my refluxer; only with the nighttime bottle as that was always the worst one. Whenever she was tired she always threw up. To a 6oz bottle I added 3 scopps of cereal. It really, really helped. I found barley and rice worked the best.

We also added cereal for my refluxer, and it did help also.

If your kiddo is a happy spitter, I might not thicken bottles, but if he refluxes with pain, than thickened bottles can really help.

Hope the spitting gets better!  :)

Thanks for your replys,
I am gonna try the cereal in the bottles, until we see the ped.  Hopefully it will make a difference.
