Title: reduced napping
Post by: chell on February 10, 2006, 18:38:21 pm
hi, I wondered what you ladies thought...Jacob is 15 months and over the past couple of weeks has been waking early from his afternoon nap. He still has 30-45mins in the morning and it used to be 1.5 hours in the afternoon (11.5-12 at night). now he has been frequently waking after 40-50 mins in hte afternoon. I'm not sure if he is begining to grow out of them, or it could be because I spent several days out of the house on the trot and he's got into a bad habit. He is grouchy when he wakes, but does seem to cope ok - but only on some days. What do you think??

Hi Chell, could be growth spurt.Try giving him something like a banana before nap, that
may help,or move nap time by about 15 mins later than usual.
It just could be a blip.Give it another couple of weeks at a later naptime

Thanks for your reply. That's really weird actually, because I hardly ever give him banana, but as it happened I did today and he did go down a bit later too - he slept for nearly 2 hours! So you must be right..i'll try it again tomorrow.

He could be ready to strt transitioning to 1 nap - that's what my son did, had shorter and later naps in the afternoon until he refused to go down at all. Your son is about the right age for it.

DD did the same, 45 mins in the morning and taking longer to settle in the afternoon at about 13 months. I gradually cut the am down by 5 mins every few days until we reached 30  mins then cut it out, brought lunch and nap time foward by about half an hour.

Oh right, ok, so You reckon I should cut down the morning nap - by waking him early? I was wondering about amalgamating the am and pm naps to make one big pm nap.....(which would be great) but he goes to nursery most mornings, so this would make it hard to make a gradual transition and to be consistent.......hhmm ???

My ds did the same when he was ready to go to one nap.  I did the same as a pp said by limiting the am nap to an hour.  I then eventually cut it out all together and just moved the one nap up to start the transition.  It is a tough transition and takes a while to fully settle in.
