Hi - I have yet to go to the grocery store and look, but does anyone know of a milk-free brand of butter or margarine? A nutritionist recommended that I start adding some melted butter to my dd's food as she needs more calories (whole other issue....). Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!

We use a Dominick's brand Homestyle Spread Light. It is a vegetable spread made with soybean oil. I don't know if you have a Dominick's near you, but maybe try a store brand.

fleishman's unsalted. i butchered the spelling but you should know, lol. there is another one we had out west but i can't remember it's name...i had never heard of it before. it had a short two syllable name, plain packaging....man, i have searched online and still can't find it! ugh. it was sold at qfc and safeway out west.
just keep reading labels at all the stores...there are products out there!

Nucoa (comes in sticks) was what I used when I couldn't have dairy while BFing ds (he's intolerant). It's like $1.39 for a pound.

YES, Nucoa!!! that was the other one i was thinking of, thanks! whew, my brain was tired trying to search online, lol. i actually thought about registering to buy online groceries at a western grocery store just to browse the brands of butter ??? :o ;D ;)

If you are trying to up your lo's calories, have you tried oils? My friend has a 14 mo old who is allergic to LOTS of things. she also spoke to a nutritionist who recommeded this, putting oils in or on his food. He is allergic to peanuts so she has to be very careful to buy kids that aren't manufactured in a plant that also manufactures peanut oil. She calls the company to see because she doesn't trust the label. She settled on a natural brand of flaxseed oil. Something to look into if your lo has other allergies also.

For baking I use shortening sometimes or the Fleishman's sticks. I made bread this morning with fleishman's stick and soy milk.
For eating, rarely use butter as there are much healthier alternatives available as mentioned in oils. I use a lot of pure olive oil on pastas. Pasta with olive oil and a pinch of kosher salt is VERY tasty. :) You get the good fats this way. Most butter and butter products have mostly saturated fats.

Thanks everyone for your replies! I did get the Fleishman's no salt margarine but have not used it yet. We feel weird about her eating margarine or butter because we don't eat either. I only cook with olive oil, never butter. She is eating much better so will hold off on adding margarine or oil to her food. But it is good to know about the flaxseed oil. We usually have that on hand as dh puts it in his breakfast "smoothie".

Saffola unsalted is also dairy free--there isn't a store in town here that carries the fleishman's, but they have saffola.
