Title: 2 year old won't drink
Post by: Lavinia on February 23, 2006, 10:56:23 am
Hi there,

Can anyone give us some thoughts or ideas?

Our dd is just 2 years old and we are having increasing difficulty in getting her to drink adequately.  She eats really well and has a balanced diet.

As an example, this morning, she only had 2 oz of fluid and refused point blank to have anymore.  She doesn't care for milk or water so has juice mixed with water.  We've tried sitting with her to encourage her to drink, making a fuss when she does, letting her get her own drink, all sorts but nothing really seems to work.  She always has access to a drink but her cup nearly alaways comes back full. She is chronically constipated anyway and this is obvisouly not helping; she is taking movacol for the constipation.

Our health visitor says she should be having one pint of milk per day (we're lucky if she has 3/4 sips) plus 5-6 glassses of water.  Some days she may only have 10oz fluid all day.

We're at a loss and don't know what to do next.  Does anyone have any bright ideas?  I've read soya milk can be easier to digest, do any of you have little ones who like soya milk?  Has it been more welcome than cows milk?

Thanks for your help,

Lavinia

I don't know if this will help, but have you tried a cup with a straw? My son refuses to drink water from his sippy cup. If we give him a mug with a straw he will drink the entire thing. It's an insulated mug with a lid. Don't know if it will work for you LO, but might be worth a try. We also buy yogurt drinks. It is right by the regular yogurt, but is thin enough to drink.

Maybe try letting her pick her own special cup from t he shop, or try letting her drink out of a regular cup.  Our dd is two and drinks the most when we let her drink from our cup :-\

Thank you all for your replies.  My brother gave us a little shot glass which she absolutely loves and has been drinking a bit more.  Today she had just over a pint of fluids, probably about 700 mls.  I've no idea whether this enough but it's a big improvement.  Thanks again
