Title: How to drop the bottle at age one?
Post by: runningmom on February 26, 2006, 01:29:03 am
My daughter will be turning one in less than two weeks (Boo hoo  :(  I am so sad) and I have been told by a lot of other moms that this is when you need to drop the bottle and switch to a sippy cup.  I would like to know if anyone out there has any great advice or tips on how to make this transition go as smooth as possible?  Or if there is any advice you can give me on this topic.
Right now she is formula fed and is allergic to milk products, so nutramigen is her drink of choice.  Thanks!

Nic

I don't have any great advice, but we are in the midst of switching over from bottles to sippies.  Right now, I am doing whole milk in a sippy with breakfast, and doing my darnest to get ds to take it.  If he doesn't, I dump the rest in a bottle and give it to him after breakfast.  However, just today, ds drank about 5 oz from the sippy, so no bottle this morning!  Yeah!

Have you introduced the sippy at all?  I started using the Nuby sippy (with a soft silicone spout - which is soft like a bottle nippe) probably about 3 months ago, just with water.  It took ds forever to "get" it, but he finally did, and now he's drinking from it himself, holding it and everything.  I tried using that same sippy for the milk in the morning, but he didn't want it.  So I switched to a different type sippy, and that's the one he started drinking the milk from.

Anyway, my long term plan is to get him to take enough milk from the sippy at breakfast, and drop that bottle completely.  Then move on to lunch, then dinner.  I figure I need to take my time, and give ds time to adjust, cause he's been on bottles for so long, that it's not really fair of me to expect him to get rid of them overnight or anything!

Good luck!

Liv turned 1 last weekend and our plan is the  same as Tammy's but we have not started yet. we transitioned from formula to whole milk (and that was fine) and i am going to start the cups at lunch this week. we will be doing it slowly b/c dd2 does not eat very much solids some meals and definitely stil drinks a lot in her 3 bottles and i do not want to make it a situation of take it or not... i want to build up lunch cup drink and then breakfast and leave bedtime bottle for last because she takes A LOT before bed.

We just recently finished the bottle to sippy transition (well, except for bedtime bottle, which we will keep for a while).  I started by giving milk in a sippy at meals.  For us, a sraw sippy worked the best since he didn't have to tip it, and he was able to drink more at a time with a straw.  Once he seemed conmortable with the sippy, I dropped the mid-day bottle.  For a long while, he only drank "sips" out of the sippy, but recently I started giving it in between meals, and he seems to drink a lot more when he can wander around and drink.  It was then easy to drop the morning bottle.

Good luck with it!  Don't feel bad if it doesn't happen right away.  :)
