Title: Nappy change horror
Post by: Harvies Mum on February 28, 2006, 00:42:47 am
Every nappy change my DS kicks me SOOOO hard that I have brusies on my tummy. He absoulutly HATES getting his nappy changed and I HATE changing him....

Anyone have some tips on helping him with this... I have tried giving him a toy and playing music... but I don't always have these things available... ie.. THE MALL... AHHHH   :'(

Ok, SOOOO been there, done that, wrote the book!!! ::) ::) ::)

It's AWFUL, isn't it??!!!

So, at the mall or anywhere out and about - try giving him your keys, your purse to look through, anything that he normally isn't allowed to have.

What we did with ds, and this sounds alot worse than it is (try it!) is to sit on the floor, with your legs spread open.  Lay ds in between your legs wiht his head at your feet.  GENTLY use your feet to hold his head in place (those darn squirmy bodies!!:)) while you use your thighs to hold body/legs in place.

And get the diaper change over as quickly as possible!!! :-)

I also always said somethign like "I'm sorry you don't like this, but it has to be done.  Diaper changes are non-negotiable" (not that he understood the last part, but it always seemed to calm me down - those kicks can make you mad!!)

It IS a phase.  And it DOES suck.

I now ask ds to come and lay down for his diaper change, and he does!!!!! :o :o ;D
NEVER would have thought that would have happened!!!

Tonyaamstutz: That's the same way I hold Isom down to suck out the boogers!  Head between the legs and pin his arms down with my thighs.  He always hated being restrained (even in a swaddle) and he would scream bloody murder.  But I wouldn't get slapped or kicked and he would get his nose clean.

Isom's mom - we LOVE that position!!  Works for lots of things, doesn't it?? ;)

One of my co-workers told me to try it, and it works so well, even with my strong and squirmy boy!!! ;D

Oh I am so with you, and I know he is only small but the kicks hurt!!!! It was becoming a bit of a thing between us, I think I hated changing time more than him. So over the last few days when he has kicked me, I started to cry and told him that hurt mummy. He cried and asked for a cuddle. So everytime he kicked me I would do the same and he seems to be getting much better ( well fingers crossed).
I do know if this is the correct way of doing things but i Had tried everyting and I was starting to want to smack his bottom  :'(.

SOOO frustrating huh? Oh well. One day they will be 21 and all grown up and then its pay back time!!!  :-X
That is when the embarrassing stories come out at the 21st birthday party's.

omg, bella is doing the same thing, she is not kicking though, she is trying to turn onto her side to sit up!  i am still using the changing table because its pretty long and big(custom built) but its becoming a wrestling match to do the diaper, sometimes if i give her a book she will let me change her if i am real quick...I may have to try that restrain method you guys mentioned.

I tried the restraint method that you describe but now find it easier to do them on my lap, I am a childminder and also have a 16 month old of my own. I care for 2 nine month old babies and find them all much easier on my lap as they are less able to move around.  They do still have a whinge but I just make sure that it's over with asap.  My neighbour has triplets and she said that the only way to change hers was on her lap so I guess I am doing something right if it worked for her!
