My little one was breastfed till 4 months but then I switched to formula due to mastitis. Since being on formula his poo has really changed its much more solid and he seems to have a hard time doing a poo. can formula milk, or certain types of it cause constipation? should i switich to another kind?

I am not sure if it affects all babies. My lo has always been bottle fed, and was getting hungry earlier and earlier everyday, so I switched him to the hungry baby formula. This I found constipated him. I kept him on the formula for amonth hoping that things would change however they did not. When I switched back to stage 1 he seemed fine. When we introduced solids it did start again, but that is a whole other story.
What formula are you using? We use Cow and Gate.

Yes it can. I always treated formula as a meal, rather than a liquid, so, as soon as we transferred onto ff after bf (about 6 months), I introduced small bottles of water - a couple a day, that really helps soften up the poo :P

We used SMA Gold from birth with Jack, but it made him constipated. My health viisitor advised that SMA can typically affect some babies like that and advised switching to Aptamil, which we did and he has had no problems since.
I never had the SMA problem with Ellie-May, maybe it affects boys more? Just a thought?! :)

Thanx everyone! I think it was this formula (Humana) that was making him constipated...great tip about givin ghim water...is it not too early? he is 4 and a half month old

Water is fine to give them - my lo never took it so I had to give him baby fruit juice which he took - I now water it down until it is almost like water

Any formula with iron can cause constipation. I gave Callum and Gemma good start, and Liam gets the president's choice formula.

I changed Thomas to the Stage 3 formula for babies from 6 months - It has extra iron in it - I used it for 2 days and he became so constipated that he could not sleep as his tummy was sore - I had to give him a suppository and that helped, but have switched back to the original formula that he was on.
