Title: how long does your 18month old nap???
Post by: Izzy-B's mommy on March 09, 2006, 19:08:46 pm
My 18.5 month old use to nap for 3 hours (I usually had to go in a wake her up :o)
But, for the last 2 weeks she's been sleeping only between an hour & 20min to 2 hours...
Not really sure if this is just the next phase of sleeping :'(   Or if maybe she'll snap out of it ???
((I'm sure you all know which one I'm hoping for))

How long are you lo's napping for?  Did you notice a dip like this when they started napping for shorter periods, or do you think this is too early???

Brooklyn naps for 2 hours - from 12-2pm every day - although today she's been a bit more difficult so she is just now falling asleep and it's 1pm :-\

She's been at one nap for a while now - I'd say 5 months even....and it's been really consistently 12-2pm for about 3 of those months. Every once in a while she naps a bit longer and of course there are days it's shorter or even last week we had 3 no nap days :o >:(

I think the 2 hour thing is pretty typical - but I would go by your dd's temperment...Does she seem to need more sleep than what she is getting or is she adjusting well? Obviously the 20 minute nap is too short - so hopefully she snaps out of that. But 3 hours - wow, that must be heavenly - or rather, must have been :'(

Take care - I guess enjoy the two hours when you get them ;)

Hailey, did it take a while before Brooklyn's nap lengthened? how long is she up for in the morning before her nap?
i wonder if i should keep meg up for closer to 6hrs....

dd is in the cot for approx. 2.5/3.00 hours  :) :) :), sometimes she goes straight to sleep other days she plays and talks abit, sometime however it is approx 100 minutes this is mostly if there is a loud sound  :-[

I really had posted something but I guess it disappeared.... :-\

Brooklyn has always been a decent napper so I am lucky in that department...But getting her onto a predictable routine has made a world of difference. She is up at 8am every morning and then up for 4 hours before her nap. Then from nap to bedtime (7pm) she is up for 5 hours. It works brilliantly for us.

I have found that even on days when her nap is later than usual, keeping her bedtim between 7 and 730 is a must. Otherwise it's just a terror.

Let me know if there is anything else you want to know. I am not an expert - all I can tell you is what happens here.

Good luck getting the longer stretch out of dd - 1 hour must certainly be frustrating! ::)

gina naps for about 2 hours on average somedays it is longer some days a bit shorter-- is she teething or doing anything developmental? growing? i hope it is a stage and unless her nighttime sleep has gotten longer i bet it probably will go back to 3 hour naps.. she is to young to start to outgrow naps yet :)--just keep doing what you are doing and wait longer to go in to get her unless she is crying --but if she will play in her crib when she wakes up she might start to fall back asleep.

Thanks everyone!!   I sure hope this is a phase...  I miss my 3 hour naps!  She was always really good to talk and play by herself until I went in, but the last 2 weeks she's been crying when she wakes up.  Yesturday I went into her room and was very cheerful and started to tidy up (like I did when I was getting her use to being in her crib) and gave her some books to read, and she stayed in there  for about 15min.  Today She whined abit when she woke up, but occupied herself for about 25 min... so maybe it'll start getting better.
She has been teething, maybe that's it.  (she's got 4 teeth poking through)
And our routine hasn't changed at all, so I'm sure that's not it...
Maybe I'll chalk it up to teething, and say a little prayer that she goes back to being my good little napper again ;)

Thanks everyone.. good to know she's too young yet to be getting rid of her last nap...
That's a load off ;D

Sam's naps recently (a month ago) went from 2.5 hours to around 1.5. They are now very rarely longer than 1.5 and this seems to be how it is to stay. He sleeps around midday - usually 12 - 1.30ish. I've had to adjust to losing an hour of time for getting things done. Yikes.

Harrison (17.5 mths) just started to transition to one nap about a month ago - he has increased from 1 1/4hrs to 1 3/4hrs. Not sure that I will get much more than this........he gets up at 6ish and sleeps 12.30pm - so a long morning but luckily he doesn't get too cranky!

DD transitioned to 1 nap at 13 months and did 2 hours but for the past 3 weeks we are down to an hour and a half! She wakes up happy but I would love that extra half hour back. She naps 5 hours after wake up time and then has about 5.5 bit less hours in the afternoon. She gave up her cat nap at about 5 months too.  Hmmm does this mean our nap will go away relatively early? I get the feeling yes  ???

it's so funny how all us mommies are slaves to our lo's nap's!!!  ::)

I wonder if they know how much control they have over us  :-[ :-[ :-[

DD is only 15 mo 2wks, but I had to pop in and see how things are going w/your 18-monthers.

DD was/is (don't wanna jinx myself) a good napper.  She WAS also doing the 3-hour nap, but lately it's reduced to 2 hours.  Problem is, she needs that other hour, or at least another 40 min or so.  What happens is she gets too tired to eat and then goes to bed w/o eating dinner.  (She's a very very light eater as it is.)

Her schedule is bedtime 7p.m. and wakes up around 7- 7:30 a.m.  Her naptime is approx 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. (WAS 2 p.m.).  I'm going to wait a few days to see if it goes back to 3, but, can I ask a question?

Do you think maybe it's a good idea to push her naptime back and see if she'll sleep longer?  and/or if it'll help her get to bedtime w/o getting too tired?  In other words, do you think I should start trying to work toward a 12 p.m. nap?  I really hate messing with a good thing.  She consistantly goes down at 11 and is out in 10 min.  But, I also don't like doing a 2nd nap after 5 pm. or so and then waking her to eat.  Is that terrible?

I just think, if it were me and I was tired, I'd say leave me alone and let me sleep.  I just worry about her not eating enough.  Okay, I think I'm rambling now, I'll stop.   :P

Well,  Isabella seems to be getting back on track!  YAYE!      back to 2.5-3 hour naps..   must have been her teeth!

Gogo...  IMO, I'd try and get her napping at 12.   I did that with Isabella b/c we had that same problem (only she napped at 10am)  It worked wonders...    I just kept her busy... I feed Isabella her lunch at 11 (gives her a boost) and then we play after and she's ready by 12 and is out within minutes..

Let me know how everything goes

My dd is 19 months and when she first transitioned to 1 nap a couple of months ago she would take long naps (2-2.5 hours)  but has been taking 1.5 to 1.75 pretty consistently for a while and only getting about 9.5 to 10 hours at night so she's certainly not getting much sleep.  I work so it's hard to know what goes on for her during the day.  I just had a couple of days of and noticed that she was yawning around 10--her old nap time.  I didn't try to get her down but I'm wondering whether they almost go through a nap regression, where for a period they almost seem to need the 2 naps but at the same time are a bit past it.  I heard that there is always a period that 2 naps were too many and 1 not enough but I didn't think this happened after the transition...I did read in one of the sleep books that around 2 years old they can nap up to 3 hours.  Maybe for us with short nappers that means they'll start taking longer naps around then.
