Title: freezing baby food
Post by: teezee on March 24, 2006, 06:12:56 am
ok i know i have read this before but i have just recently been away and have to clean out some of dd's frozen food.  i usually don't have this problem as she finishes it all within a couple weeks of making it. anyway, how long do frozen veggies, fruits and meats last in the freezer??

Hi Tawnya,

I just checked on a site and it says its safe to freeze pureed baby food for up to 3 months but its advised to use it within 1 month.  I also found a good site for recipes and ideas, you may have all your meals planned but I found it quite helpful so im posting it anyway.

I'd say 3 months as long as the freezer has been kept really cold and the bags they are in are sealed well

ok thanks everyone - appreciate the quick replies. i thought it was a much shorter duration but that helps with not throwing so much food out...thought it was something like 8 weeks for vegs/fruits and 4 weeks for meats - like i said i'm glad i won't have to throw anything out - i will just use it all very quickly!
oh and mum of 2 thanks for the link -always looking for new recipes!!

I had a Q about *how* to freeze the food -- I was given a lot of little glass jars with lids and the plastic rectangular gerber pots with lids too. Assuming that they're clean, is it ok to fill these with my homemade concoctions and freeze?

i have always used ice cube trays and transfer to ziplock baggies myself - although now that dd is eating more it is getting a little unrealistic with those little cubes - i have heard muffin trays are good but don't know about glass jars - would like to hear ppl's thoughts as well.

I wouldn't be inclined to used glass bottles either.

I wouldn't suggest using glass bottles to freeze baby food either. They shatter very easily when they go from cold to hot or vice versa. Also, the food tends to expand as it freezes so if there is no room for it to expand it will shatter also.

I freeze the food in ice cube trays also. You can also do the "plop" method where you plop spoonfuls on a cookie sheet and put that in the freezer. Once they're frozen, just put them into freezer bags.
