Title: Anyone Use Cloth Diapers?
Post by: Renee'sMum on April 02, 2006, 23:56:43 pm
My dd is 4mo old. I have been trying to use cloth diapers as much as I can. We have been using disposables overnight. If I switch at night to cloth, would it be a good idea to change diaper when she wakes to feed? Right now I just feed her, she falls back to sleep to I put her back in crib.
Also, any natural cleaning remedy for those stains???

Hi!  We made the switch to using cloth diapers full time not too long ago and night time has not been bad at all.  We use a Fuzzi Bunz pocket diaper and you can stuff it to the absorbency you need.  They have been great for us.  Another mom on this forum made a great suggestion that I check the website diaperpin.com for product reviews and advice on cloth diapers.  It is awesome........I'm addicted to the boards there as much as I am to the ones here.

.......hanging the diapers out in the sun bleaches pretty well.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

I have used cloth on Arwen since we came home from hospital. Initially at night time I did change her when she was fed, but when she started falling back to sleep more easily (and not having a dirty nappy at every feed!) I stopped changing nappies at night. I just add a booster, or use one of her big brother's nappies. I just change nappies as soon as we all wake up (or rather when we get up ;-)) before going downstairs.

I also second the suggestion that sunlight is best for stains, though I have to admit that during the wetter months I just get used to the stains. The urine smell is more my problem as I don't soak the nappies, so I like to put a couple of drops of lavender oil or tea tree oil in the fabric conditioner bit in the washing machine. I have heard that vinegar is good for that too.

Hi Renee's Mum,

I also use cloth (but disposables at night), good for you. Below is a link to a thread in the lounge that you might find helpful.

As for changing in the night, I think that depends on your lo - we avoided it as much as possible with my lo since he's spirited and that activity was too much for him at night, it was nearly impossible to get him to go back down.  ::) But some babies barely even notice...

I don't change DS at night, and haven't since I switched to cloth at 3 mo.  I just add in extra stuffing and call it good.

Diaperpin is GREAT!  The ladies there are sooooo helpful.

The best way to get rid of stains is to hang the wet diapers in the sun for a few days.  IF that doesn't work, you can try wetting them with lemon juice, that seems to speed up the process.  I've also heard that you can make a paste of lemon juice and baking soda, spread that one them and scrub with a toothbrush.  If they are diaperrash cream stains, scrubbing them with a grease-cutting dishsoap like dawn with a toothbrush or fabric brush should take care of it.  If you get really desperate and frustrated with the stains, you can use a stain treater like shout, but you have to rinse like 4 extra times to make sure you get it all out, so it's not really worth it in my opinion.

HTH!

Thanks for the responses!!!  Right now I use plain folded terry squares with plastic covers and I knew that she would be soaked by morning.  Changing her wakes her too much.  That's why I was using the disposables.

I was thinking of purchasing a few of the FuzziBunz to try.  But when searching on-line about them, I found some sites on how to make your own.  So I think that I might try that first (with some help from my mom!!).  Could be more cost effective. If what I make doesn't work as well, then I go from there!!

My ds has just flat folded nappies at night - he's now in the process of being night toilet trained, so not much of an issue. But when he was a baby, I'd add extra boosters to keep him going - I made my own out of old towels in the shape of a large pad, but you can buy them and just add more if you're finding him waking up wet. Causes a bit of a waddle, but it's only for nights. As far as covers, I'd get something a bit more breathable than plastic pants. The wraps I use are made of PUL (it's a waterproof breathable fabic) - I've tried two brands, Bummi's and ProRaps - both are excellent. I know a lot of mums prefer wool covers for nights because they will breath more and let the moisture out and dry off. If I were to do it all again, I'd get some pocket nappies like Fuzzibunz, I think they have a microfleece inner to keep the moisture away from the skin. I haven't converted my dd to cloth at night yet, but she's in cloth during the day.

Sabrina, Lilah's Mommy, also makes her own - you might PM her about it, she's even got some patterns that she could probably send you.
