Title: what to do with egg yolk?
Post by: home alone on April 05, 2006, 13:43:47 pm
Hi

I gave Mia egg yolk hard boiled with formula.  She takes but never more than couple of bites.  I mash it up with formula.  Should I hold off or could someone suggest other ways to serve egg yolk?

Thanks,

Monica

Monica,
I tried egg yolk with dd1 at 7 months and she didn't care for it then and doesn't much care for it now at 3.5 years.  Like any new food, try again in a couple days.  It may take a while to accept the new taste, and texture.

i find that my lo will only have a couple bites of hard boiled yolks but will eat the entire yolk if i scramble it -- sometimes i do it by itself, other times i add a little cheese and/or milk, i have also heard to add in peas or other veggies as it will be even more nutritious - i haven't tried it yet but can't see why not.

I mix it in with whatever breakfast is...with is cereal or fruit or whatever.  I've also even mixed it with yogurt/fruit or cottage cheese.  My thought it just to get it into them...for the protein, doesn't matter the delivery.
But yes, keep in mind that just because a lo doesn't like it tomorrow, it might be their favorite food next week.
For like 3 weeks my lo "gagged" over peas, now he can eat them straight up and doesn't flinch.  I just kept offering them every other day or so, and one time he smiled instead of gagging.  Whatever!

I held off on yolks for 2 wks and gave it but no success.  The good news is she didn't care for avocado but after few days she loved it.  I think I will wait again for few days.

Teezee, I am interested in scrambling yolk.  Is there a good way to separate it so that I won't get any egg whites?

Monica,
I have an egg yolk separater... you can also carefully crack the egg (so you don't crack the yolk) and pour the yolk back and forth between the two halves of the shell and the white will drop out.  I saved the whites to use later, but never ended up using them.  I forgot about scrambling the yolk, I did that too and served it as finger food.

Sorry teezee if I jumped in there.

Once your LO can eat chunks of bread, you can make egg yolk french toast. Just dip the bread in a bit of egg yolk and fry it up like regular french toast. One of Tyler's favorites!
