i'm not sure where to post this, so move it if you need to...
my 16 month old dd now has 12 teeth. she used to let me brush her teeth for 20-30 seconds per night which i though was good enough. now she FREAKS OUT when i try to put a toothbrush near her mouth. she will hold the toothbrush and put it in her mouth herself, but in no way do i consider this sufficient brushing.
i have bought her a new toothbrush. i let her hold one brush while i hold the other. i have tried distracting her. nothing works. does anyone have any new ideas??

to be honest i have never really brushed dd teeth just can't do it, dd get toothpaste on a brush and sucks mostly, some days, a few a month she lets me bush one of two teeth, i worry endlessly about this but what can i do, sorry i can't be of any help lindsey but am interested in any replies you get

We take turns with ds brushing his teeth ("good job using your toothbrush - now it's Mommy's turn to brush your teeth"). He mostly likes to suck on the toothbrush, too, but once he discovered how to "scrub" his teeth, we're gradually seeing less sucking and more actual brushing from him. But to get the job done, we let him start and finish, then take turns with him until we get it done properly.
We haven't yet tried this, but maybe you could also get some books about brushing teeth and see if that helps her - it seems like she's gotten soured on the process somewhere along the lines. There's bound to be some out there - there are books about everything for kids these days. It will take time, though - let us know how it goes!

we bought a battery operated one . you can get them with characters on ! he loves using it as it tickles his tongue . he even lets me use it at the end to make sure his teeth have had a good clean . only problem we have now is he sucks all the toothpaste off and eats it !!

We sing silly songs and act completely ridiculous when Tyler resists brushing teeth. We've also had some luck switching up toothbrushes. He has a couple of normal ones and one of the finger brushes for babies, and letting him choose which one we use helps too. The last time I went to the dentist, I asked for some ideas and she gave me a couple of good ones. She said that just using a washcloth without toothpaste can do the job, so we just do that during Tyler's bath while we're washing his face. She also said you can use a washcloth or toothbrush without toothpaste while your LO is sleeping at night, but we have yet to try that one!

With my toddler we have always used silly noises to encourage him to have his teeth cleaned and to make it fun. He says Aghhhhhhhhhhhh to open wide and do his back teeth and eeeeeee when we want him to bite his teeth together so we can clean the front ones. He also knows that if he is good he gets to have the toothbrush at the end to finish cleaning them himself. He particularly likes the strawberry sparkly toothpaste that you can get!

We have been at this game for at least 9 months now and dd has all but her 2 year molars. Even though I know she was not brushing properly I just let her do it herself, regular routine, go to Mommys bathroom in the morning/evening and I do mine and she shoves the toothbrush in and out of her mouth- no toothpaste. However we have made progress recently as dd is dirt obsessed so I just tell her her teeth are dirty and I will finish cleaning them for her, get to do a quick brush, then she has to do mine with her brush ( yeuck :-) )

My husband and I have electric toothbrushes and she loves puting the handle in her mouth to feel the vibration. I bought her an electric toothbrush (babies r us $12) and she will let me brush all that I want. She smiles and I think she makes the connection between her toothbrush and ours.

My ds is only 10 months old, but he has 8 teeth. I've been feeling so guilty that a) I forget to brush his teeth somedays and b) when I do remember he won't let me do it! Please tell me his teeth aren't going to turn black and fall out. :P

My ds had 8 teeth by 9 months old and i didn't brush them every day, they will not go black and fall out. I have seen a great toothbrush with a guard on so baby can 'clean' own teeth, at least they would get some scrubbing that way! I have also seen toothbrushes that slip on end of your finger so baby can chew on it, this works well when they are teething and also provides some cleaning.
: tylersmommy- says below that a washcloth wrks just aswell so as she says you could try that while washing babies face.
My toddler now has a sparkly toothbrush which flashes for 60 seconds-he loves it and won't stop scrubbing until the flashing has stopped!

It is great, it has a duck in the handle and glitter like a snow storm thingy! I got it from an ebay shop called Kiddies Land http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Kiddies-Land
It was £1.25 on buy it now, so no bidding. I have just checked and they still have some in stock.

when i took my girl (27months)sucked the toothbrush with paste on it and said this was fine and now she brushes them on her own for a minute twice a day we brush our teeth together and she loves it

i bought her an electric toothbrush. no luck yet. she likes me to hold it and turn it on, but she gets afraid if i put it near her mouth. i did find though that if i let her play wtih her toothbrush while she is in the bath, she is much more likely to do some 'brushing' than after the bath which is when i have been trying to get her to brush. i'm just relieved to hear that they won't get black and fall out anytime soon. ;)

Does anyone find that their little one's have yellow teeth? Even though
I have brushed his teet (as good as I can) his top 2 teeth seemed stained?
Any advice?
