Title: should I try an earlier nap?
Post by: imsmum on April 17, 2006, 20:28:16 pm
Since the time change Margot (20 months) has had a bit of a wonky schedule-- napping from 1-3:15 (she is usually woken by the nanny in order to pick up my older dd from school) but then sleeping from 8:45 to 6:30.  Prior to the time change she was sleeping from 7:30-5:30 with a nap between 12:30 and 2.  So her bedtime has basically shifted an hour forward (yeah!) but her nap has only shifted 1/2 hour forward and she usually naps for longer(yeah!).  I've been worrried about shifting her nap earlier in case we go back to the 7:30-5:30 routine which was so hard because I work and it was so difficult to try to get home and get her down for 7:30, not to mention the dreaded early wakeup.  Also she had been getting more total sleep with this schedule.

This last week she has been waking in the night after sleeping really well with her new schedule for nearly 2 weeks so I'm not sure that the waking is schedule related or not.  I should say that this schedule is one she has "chosen", I start her wind down at 6:45, so she's usually in bed around 7:15 or 7:30  On the rare occasions she falls asleep earlier at night she usually wakes up!  She's pretty set on her 5.5 hours between nap and bedtime.  Just wondering if I should try to shorten the time between wake up and nap.  I don't want her napping too long during the day though--she's always had a short sleep requirement so I'm worried if she naps for 3 hours she'll only sleep 9 hours at night!

I would not suggest moving her nap but maybe waking her up from her nap at bit earlier - like 15 minutes earlier. It might allow her to go to sleep a little earlier at night but hopefully not make her wake earlier in the morning.

I would agree with Henrysmama and wake Margot up at 3pm - see how that makes a difference. Having said that Harri does follow his 10.5hr sleep (mostly) to the minute. Occasionally earlier - never later! As Margot seems quite similar should be easy to tell if that works!

Funnily enough we are just having the night wakings again after a couple of weeks - "easy ones" as in resettles (with me there) within 30mins - but I don't know why - our schedule is the same! Teething maybe H has one canine to go just below the surface. Has Margot any teeth due to pop through?

Justine--So our kids have been telecommunicating again have they?  I've been wondering the same thing about the teeth.  She's got 2 of her canines, so it might be the other 2.  There are some signs of teething--like she's stopped the morning bf ---but could just as easily be that she is now too"busy" to delay starting her day!  Also wondering about nightmares--one night when she woke up she was half crying and saying "no, mummy, no green bean!"

The last 2 nights she has slept through although yesterday she woke 1.5 hours after her nap but the nanny thinks she went back to sleep for another .5 hour.  She went down early last night--8:20 and woke at 5:50--so about the same total night sleep, maybe a bit less! We're pretty stuck on the 9.75 to 10 hours night sleep it seems. I probably will let her sleep her "normal" nap today to see if she goes back to the late schedule.  I don't mind her current schedule provided that she is getting a solid night's sleep so I think I'll wait awhile to see if the night wakings resolve on their own. Thanks!

I wondered about nightmares too. harrison was really bothered by a "tigger" in another room and DH didn't hide it before bed. When he woke crying last night, he seemed half asleep and I laid him down and he went straight back off - he'd not really been awake otherwise would have taken longer!

I never know with teeth, seems odd if they just wake once and go back off.....it's all a "puzzlement"! Harri has been a bit tetchy though - like you I am just rolling with it for the time being!

Good luck.

Quick update---Margot only napped from 12:45 to 2:30 today--.5 less than normal.  I think I'm going to have to be really consistent with things right now since it really doesn't seem to take much for things to snowball with her.  weird though on the nights that she has slept thru and not woken her naps are either shorter or she wakes part way thru.

Hope Harri settles down for you again, and this is just one of those inexplicable develoopmental blips they seem to go thru.
