Title: They all need to do this?
Post by: Mom2X&F&V on April 26, 2006, 15:11:10 pm
Hi. Lo is much of her A time crawling, pulling up, cruising and pusshing chairs around the house, and I am so glad. When I put her to play sitted with her toys so she can stack them or put inside and then outside she just throws everything out of her way. She is not interested in stacking or putting stuff in and out or playing on her own while sitting down. I know she is moving around, but I also know they need to play by themselves... Any suggestion? Is it like normal that she is not interested? thanks

I wish I knew.  You can hear ds's little brain saying "must walk, must walk, must walk".  (Only it's always with mommy's help.)  He hasn't really played with toys in about 6 weeks.

Mine plays with stuff for a few minutes.  Then it's "gotta crawl, gotta catch that kitty, ..."

OK, I'm sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but isn't she pretty much entertaining herself by cruising, crawling, moving around, etc?  You have to think that the novelty of moving around and seeing more of the world is way more interesting than stacking toys right now anyway?  :)  Babies learn through toys - spatial relationships, sorting, categorizing, etc, so it's just my thought that now your LO is onto the "moving around and learning" stage.  I'm sure once she gets the hang of that she'll be more content to sit with her toys again. :)

i think that Erin is right!  moving IS learning!  you find out where you fit, how big you are, what moves, how to balance, how to push/pull, throw etc through eyes, inner ear/balance, touch etc
no better toys than that!  eventually when she has moving well and truly sussed she'll find something new, good luck keeping up til then!

Hi!  thanks a lot, I know she is learning a lot while her A time, but I needed to ask if it was Ok, as my MIL keeps on telling me that she should do more "intellectual" things that just moving around and being around with me. I guess she made me think and doubt.
Thanks a lot I guess I just got involved by my MIL...  she can be soooo pushy... most of the time   :-\
Thanks again.

i have always been told that EVERYTHING is a learning experience for kids - basically it helps to see it from their perspective. for example looking at a leaf in the garden is a huge experience for them - they see leaves changing colour and textures over the months, start to fall down, watch as they float and land, they can TOUCH them etc so it is not just - "oh, another leaf. ho hum" IYKWIM.  the other thing with kids is that they can get fixated on one stage until they master it before they move on, so right now your lo is all about her new found mobility, when she has had her "fill" she will start to add in other things. also - your MIL needs to understand that 1) different activities at different ages so she might not be ready for soem of the things MIL thinks she should be doing and 2) every kid is different in terms of what activities appeal to them and at what stage they work on them so apart from some broader "shoulds" that docs watch out for with milestone development the rest is a crap shoot as to what order they will do stuff or if at all.  My dd1 was very cerebral and by 11 mo was mastering advanced shape sorters etc, but dd2 just barely "plays with them" and does not insert them in the slots at all and she is 14 mo. she is a physical girl who was busy walking at the stage her sister was doing blocks and puzzles, so she reversed the order of activities - dd2 only started walking at 13-14 mo aftre she did all that "intellectual" stuff your MIL is talking about. 2 kids, 2 paths  :)

THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU!!!!!
I should trust myself.... Why is it that some MILs can be so annoying...  :-\  They also had a MIL in their past or still, they should have learned from that experience!
Thanks to all again!

Crawling and moving around is a major part of their brain stimulation, so she is definitely getting stimulation from getting around.
