Great thread!

Here's our new routine (solids first, dropped one bottle) for the past week.  We're 10 months corrected age.

6am wake and brekkie: cereal with 1 cube fruit mixed in, every other day an egg yolk...substitute toast/sandwiches with spread pf some sort if refusing cereal
7am offer more brekkie, then 8 oz bottle (will usually have half)
9am rest of bottle and nap (working on extending naps...)
1030am wake and snack: water, chopped grapes/cheerios/something like that
1130/noon lunch: usually yogurt with Vit A veg or fruit mixed in, plus a green veggie & tofu...substitute fish fingers, broccoli chunks (eg) if refusing spoon
1230/1 offer more lunch, then 8 oz bottle (will usually have half)
130/2 rest of bottle and nap (working on extending naps...)
3/330 wake and snack: water, crackers w cheese melted on/fruit
430/5 dinner: varies hugely...lately it's been pasta spirals, chicken/fish fingers, vegetable chunks
530 bathtime
6pm 10 oz bottle (usually has half)
630-730 windown, rest of bottle, sleep

My son will be 10 months in about a week.  Born 8-8-2005.
I am so confused on when to and what to feed him.

This is what he does right now.

Wake:  Bottle 8 oz.
About 20 minutes later: Breakfast, which is Oatmeal and fruit and some cheerios for finger foods

Around 10:30 Bottle 6 to 8 oz.
12:00 Lunch: Vegetables and Fruit

3:30 Bottle 8 oz.
4:00 Snack
5:00 Dinner:  Meat, vegetable, fruit

Bath and Bed.

HELP!!!  I feel like I am feeding him about every hour.  I read somewhere that at about his age, he should transition to having his bottles with his 3 meals a day and then a morning and afternoon snack.  He is SOOOOOO fussy around 5:00.  Even after I feed him.

He does not take or need a bottle at night to fall asleep.  So his last bottle is normally around 3:30, he is sleeping through the night, so I guess it works for him.

Any suggestions:  Bottle first then solids or solids then bottle.  When and how many snacks a day!

Thanks,
Wendy

Our routine is as follows:-

8:00am - 8 oz bottle - usually drinks about 6 oz of it and use the rest in his cereal - He has his cereal straight after his breakfast and it is usually 3/4 of a weetabix with 2 spoons of fruit

10:00ish - Brown Toast with Cream cheese on it -  snack of a couple of strawberries

11:45 - Lunch - 5oz of food and 2 oz of fruit as a pudding

2:30 - 4oz yogurt - and a baby biscuit / cereal bar / baby crisps

4:30 - dinner - same as lunch

6:30 - 9 oz bottle

PS I think our DS would eat all day if he could too - even after eating all that - if he sees us eating he grunts and scrunches his hands wanting more food  :o

PJ will take formula from sippy -

10.5 months old =

7am: 6 oz from sippy - he sips off an on all morning and usually finishes it.
8am breakfast: 1/2cup oatmeal and 1/2 cup applesauce w/dash cinnamon, piece of toast w/jelly or waffle
1030 snack  4oz formula few crackers/cookies and some dried fruit
1230 lunch - grilled cheese, some bites of veggies, often will eat avacado and fruit, soup, bean salad
3pm snack - 4oz formula and 1/2 cereal bar or crackers, whatever
5 dinner - chuncks of chicken, fish, meat, veggies and occasionally a starch if I have some left over, and always end with a yo-baby.  YUM YUM
630 8oz bottle

That is a typical day and we have been doing this routine for about 2 months, actually  The quantities and variety changes but the routine is the same. He is a big eater.  Seems to eat more at the end of the day, but we have always kind of cluster fed in the evening.

Good topic!

zander's mummy- just curious about your BF/formula feeds... Do you only give one  breastfeed in the morning and then a formula feed at night and nothing in between except food snacks?
I am transitioning my lo to less Breastfeeds and would like to give her formula but she doesn't seem interested during the day, your schedule seems to be like ours...

By the age of 10 Months, Thomas was only on 2 milk feeds - one in the morning, and one at night.  We subsituted his afternoon bottle with a yogurt and he was so much better with that and ended up taking more milk in the evenings.

thanks girls - that is very helpful!
I get so concerned that she is not getting enough of - whatever! (sleep, food, milk...etc)
You read so much stuff and everything has "recommendations" as to how much your lo should be eating drinking etc, when following your lo is the best thing to do!

My dd gets lots of cheese and calcium rich foods during the day so I guess I can stop stressing about her milk intake! She breastfeeds like a champ in the morning and then feeds at night with no problems.

Dd2 is 10mo.

7am bf
7.45am ish 1 tbls baby cereal mixed with water and pureed fruit (yes, very little!)
10.30am cracker with water to drink
11.30am Marmite or cream cheese and ham sandwich (sometimes eats all of the two slice sandwich) with fruit (kiwifruit or mandarin etc)
12.30pm bf
3pm banana and water
5pm meat and veges (approx 1/2 cup, varies, I just feed until she stops!).
6.45pm bf

Sometimes snacks differ, might have slice of cheese or pottle of yogurt added in there somewhere.  She is a petite little girl, so her appetite reflects this!

Our ds is 10.5 months and this is his routine, more or less.  I'm trying to work on giving him more finger foods, or diced foods, but he seems to like taking everything but bread off a spoon!

~615/630 - 6oz formula
~700/725 - 1/2 Cup baby cereal w. ~ 2-3 tbsp fruit mixed in (use about 1-2oz of formula in cereal)
~1000 - 6oz formula
~1130 - 1/2 Cup meat/veggie meal of some description.  Either bottled or homemade.
         - 1/4 cup fruit or yogurt
~1400 - 6oz formula
~1500 - snack of a baby mum-mum, bread stick, pita....varies
~1700 - 1/2 Cup meat/veggie mix, or 1/2 pasta/cheese meal.  Tends to vary.
          - 1/4 cup fruit or yogurt.
         - has cheerios or pita bread to start off with.
~1830 - 6oz formula and to bed he goes until ~ 0600 the next morning (cross fingers)

He also has water from a sippy cup at just about every meal -- he loves water!!

Ok before I post our feeding routine I have a question! What types of cheese are okay to give the little ones right now. Sofia is just about 10.5 months old. She bfs 3 times a day and has one yogurt (4oz) a day, but I am wondering if that is enough calcium for her????

Here is our feeding schedule:
6:30 am BF
8:30 am Breakfast - 1/4 cup oatmeal mixed with water and 3-4 oz of fruit (water or juice in sippy cup)
10:30 am Snack - Yogurt (water or juice in sippy cup)
12:30 pm Lunch - 3 cubes of veggies and 1 cube of meat (water or juice in sippy cup)
2:30pm BF
4:30 pm Dinner - 1/4 cup of rice cereal with 1 fruit cube mixed in, 3 cubes of veggies and 1 cube of meat
6:30 BF

Does it look like she is getting all the nutrients and food groups she needs? All of her fruit and veggies has tofu mixed into them to get her more protein. She also still has not a huge interest in foods that are not pureed! :( So we do cheerios for finger foods, but that is about it! I'd love to have her start some cheese as finger foods.

I appreciate anyones help here!!!
TIA!
KATI

It sounds like to me she is eating plenty.  3 BF's and a yogurt is a lot of calcium, so I don't think you have anything to worry about at all.

And her solid intake looks great.

I wish my son would have eaten this much.  He is 14 mos old now and eats about 1/2 what your lo eats.

I think you are doing great.  Try some cut of cheese or teh cheese crumbles they make now (in the U.S) or even string cheese is good.

* And just a though, you could always add some cream cheese or cheese in her puree.

You are so welcome.  BTW, I got some information from a friend today that took her son to a feeding clinic (at teh Childrens Hospital) and we are supposed to take my son also.  Anyhow they told her that even if her son did not drink milk, but ate cheese and yogurt everyday, he would be fine.

Trust me your lo is doing really really good compared to mine and a lot of people.

Rosie's mom-
Your routine sounds a lot like mine, but it looks like you only BF twice a day- is that right?  I'm trying to figure out whether our routine is working because our doctor says that my girls are low weight for their age... but I just can't seem to get them to eat any more than they do.  We currently nurse 3 times a day, but I am supposed to add another nursing time in.  How?  I they don't want it?
Thanks!

Thanks again, Wendy!! :)

2peasinapod...how much do your little ones weigh? Mine was only 13 lbs at her 9 month appointment and her doctor felt she was doing fine. Just gaining slowly....She is now 10 months and up to about 16 lbs....I was under the impression that as long as they are gaining they are okay......but if their doc said differently...I am not sure how to make them eat when they don't want to! Maybe try whole milk yogurt? Mine LOVES Yo Baby Organic yogurt.......just some thoughts.....Oh yea, I TOTALLY admire you for nursing two babies!! WOW!! One is still hard enough over here! :)

sometimes rosie "asks" for a third feed but yes we only nurse twice on most days.

she does get milk in her food, cheese and yogurt though as extra calcium.

rosie is small for her age too, but she's well in proportion and has always been small so i don't worry too much.

if they don't want extra nursing sessions and you need to get more calories in, then you need to look at the calorie content of what they eat as solids. if it's mostly fruits and vegetables then they need more carbs and fats.  rose gets rice or pasta  in her dinner, sometimes potato, or bread as well.

Sofiasmommy-  both of the girls were around 13 lbs at their 9 month check up.  We meet with a lactation consultant this past week who wants to do another weight check this week.  They both gained 1-2 ounces last week, so I know they are gaining.
They are mainly eating fruits and veggies and yo baby yogurt.  I'll try to increase the carbs and fats.  They don't have teeth yet so I have been afraid to try bread and other chunky foods, but I know they can mash things with  their gums... so it is worth a try.

Thanks Rosies mom for the encouragement for nursing twins.  I didn't think I could do it this long, but I am so thankful I am.  I think our doctor and the lactation consultant are concerned that their slow weight increase is because my supply is not holding up.  They seem satisfied though.

rosie has only just this week developed her first 2 teeth. She's been on pieces of bread, toast and biscuits for about 6 weeks now i think.  she will eat tiny tiny sandwiches with soft fillings - sometimes i put pureed veg/fruit in, or soft cheese, toast is only lightly toasted (not dark brown)  and buttered with unsalted butter (more calories too here!!) and chopped into little squares about 1/2 inch size.

pasta is great because you can cook it really soft, as with rice too.

basically the rule of thumb is anything you can mash with a fork they can mash in their mouths.

I would expect twins to be smaller anyway, and often (not always) breastfed babies are smaller than their bottlefed counterparts.

just noticed they were born a day after rosie!

Thank you for the finger food advice.  I have tried pasta and they do like it.  I'll give rice, toast and other stuff a try since they should be able to do it even without teeth.

Funny that they were born the day after Rosie.  They were actually supposed to be born on Dec. 12, as I was induced that day, but my body didn't take to it.  Guess they wanted one more day inside mommy!

Hi, I just wanted to say my LO was born Dec 14.  I was actually induced on the 13th but my body didn't take either.  The funny part is LO's personality is still as stubborn today as she was on her birthday.

Regarding the topic of the board, I've noticed the past 2 weeks or so that our routine has finally plateaued into a schedule.  LO eats at noon and somewhere between 4 and 5 for dinner (we're still figuring that part out).  We'll give her fruit or cheerios to snack on in between if she seems hungry, we've also added the sippy cup for snack time and that has become routine as well.  Sometimes she just plays with it, sometimes she points to it and actually wants a drink, whatever the case she knows what it is and I'm hoping it will help weening the bottle in a few months easier.

Happy November everyone, its good to see the boards back up!

we went straight to sippy cup without bottles, and now have only 2 breastfeeds a day with some milk in the sippy and juice in the sippy as well. it's great  that she's so good about it.

anyone having problems or issues with self feeding (spoon)? rosie isn't showing any inclination that way at all, and I'm wondering when that's meant to start etc?

My LO isn't at all interested in the spoon either -- but she'll pick foods up and eat them like cheerios and sometimes even lint off the couch if I don't catch her first!  Eeek!  ;)

Ok - I need to know if DS is getting TOO much milk through the day!  I have been bfing but over the past month have weaned to only 2.   He is 10 months old on the nose:
7am wake and bf
8am - 3tbsp cereal (dry, then mixed with water), 1/3 carton of yogurt, 2 cubes of fruit plus a handful of cheerios before he starts his meal and a few tbsp of chopped fruit at the end (kiwi, pineapple, grapes, banana, he'll eat any kind of fruit, lol!)
1130am - bottle, 8oz formula (usually takes 6-8oz of it)
1230pm - 1/2 grilled cheese sandwich or about 15 whole wheat pasta noodles with melted cheese, 3or 4 green beans and a few tbsp of peas or carrots, a tbsp or two of chopped meat, a few tbsp of chopped fruit and puffs or a baby mum mum.
2:30pm - 8 oz bottle before his nap, taking at least 6 oz of it most days (this is a new development and where I'm wondering if he needs less milk and more solids - he used to take this bottle after his nap but now wants it before!)
5:00pm - similar meal to lunch
7:00pm - bf

I notice many of you are doing snacks and only 2 milk feeds by now.  advice?

no that's probably about as much milk as rosie is getting.  actually though she doesn't have as much milk at snack times as him though. she gets a BF morning (7am) and night (7pm), and dairy produce as part of her 3 meals, but at snack times she gets about 3-4oz of milk. she has the first milk before her morning nap and the second one after the afternoon nap.

That makes me feel a bit better.  I'm starting to think that I'm not giving out as much milk at the bfs now that I have been on two for a few weeks.  That may explain why he suddenly takes so much at the snacks.  I always offer 8 oz then and he usually takes 7oz, occasionally a bit less or more.  He gets his first bottle after his morning nap but a little snack of some water and puffs before the nap and then the second bottle comes after his second nap but again he gets a tiny snack to hold him over through it.  He also has some other dairy through the day with yogurt, cheese and sometimes a bit of cottage cheese.

Hi, I've been reading through all the posts trying to get ideas on what I should be feeding my almost 11 mo old dd... I've got lots of good ideas, thanks.  My question is that it seems like they're forever either taking a bottle or eating... do you all do both of those things in the high chair?  Currently I put her in the high chair for her bottle, and again for any solids, but it seems like I'm forever strapping her in and I don't think she likes it very much and that may be why she doesn't want to eat much.  She loves to crawl around and I know she doesn't want to spend her time in the chair... advice please.  Also I guess I'm stuck on the 4 hour EASY and 4 x 8oz bottles a day but I think I should be cutting that down?  Any advice on how I should be doing that?  We've been having night wakings and I'm beginning to think it's her food intake causing them and not insufficient or bad naps as I had originally thought.

I can't really give you any advice on how much milk.  Ds is a tad over 10 months and getting a 7am and 7pm bf and then an 8oz bottle at about 1130am and 4pm.  He usually takes at least 6oz from those two bottles but I can tell my bf supply is starting to diminish so I am going to replace the 7am with a bottle ASAP - was planning to do it this morning but with teething he woke up at 5:15 crying and crying so I caved and soothed him with a bf - what can you do, lol!
I only use the high chair for solids.  I give his bottle in my lap.  That being said, some people I know give it in the highchair, too.  I think it is more what works best for your lo or what they will tolerate.

Hi Jenna's mom!
My 11.5 month old still drinks 4 bottles/day, but he's a pretty good eater as far as solids go. At the beginning of the month though, I did cut his 2 day time bottles back to 6 oz, and add an afternoon snack of crackers, or some other carb. Bottles are always in my lap, but he holds it (took several weeks of coaxing on that) Day goes something like this:

Early bottle 7-8 oz upon waking
8 am breakfast of finger foods: whole grain carb, protien and fruit, with sippy of H20 - he just drinks what he wants, maybe 1 oz MAX.
1045 bottle after nap - 6 oz
12 lunch of ff: same as breakfast sub veg. for fruit, sometimes
330 bottle after nap - 6 oz + snack (grahm cracker, or whole wheat crackers, sometimes a zwieback)
530 dinner of ff: same as lunch, with fruit, sippy cow's milk
About an hour after dinner I'll offer him some H20 in a cup.
7:15 bedtime bottle 7-8 oz

One thing I did notice is that lately, he;s become a bit picky about what he will eat - so I have kind of caved to that (he will eat grapes, loves them, but not broccoli, so I find myself giving him lots of grapes...cut up, of course!) but I figure I always offer healthy choices, some more so than others, and for me right now, I'd rather he gets enough food!

Not sure if this is helpful or not - maybe try giving your DD some new things, could she be tired of something? Or, just let her have a streak of eating the thing she likes best a few meals in a row to see if getting the calories in there helps her sleep more?

Waking could be so many things at that age...has she started walking?

HTH....and good luck!!!

Hi, some days solids and bottle work fine in the highchair, others not so much.
Every morning & evening bottle, usually about 8oz formula, is given in my (or her Dad) lap.  Lunch and dinner bottles are served with the meal (not everyone does this) and they are 4 oz bottles.  Some days she'll eat half her oatmeal, ask for the bottle by pointing at it, drink that then still finish her oatmeal.  Then other days she'll eat all her solids and not want the bottle unless/until I bring her back to the couch to drink it on my lap.

My question to the board is... we introduced a sippy awhile back and she does great with it.  Especially now that we do snacks she'll drink out of it just fine, even hold it herself.  WELL... she now has this habit that when she's done drinking she'll fill her mouth with water and then open her mouth just wide enough that the water spills out over her lips.  She must like the feeling of it or maybe its her new game, but if left alone with a sippy she soaks herself everytime and its not because the sippy leaks or she doesn't know what she's doing.  Any ideas how to stop that before we add milk to the sippy???

My other question is... Is there a link on this board to show what amount of protein/veg/fruit a LO should get as they transition off of formula to milk?  I don't intend to do that until 12 months, but I'm worried we're behind in introducing non puree foods - finger foods usually only come in during snack time - and although LO seems to "chew" just fine, even bite OK, she only has 2 bottom teeth and I think that slowed me down in my original plan to have her eating grilled cheese sooner than later.  If I can get a good idea of what her nutrition should look like at 12 months I can work to get her used to those foods now   ;)

Thanks!!

Post by: rosie and joe's mummy on November 09, 2006, 14:53:00 pm
rosie has only ever had milk from a sippy, i still breastfeed her twice a day but never introduced a bottle, we just went straight from boob to bottle for the snacktime milks.  She sits in the lounge with her sippy and a biscuit.

Rosie does the water everywhere thing, but when it's time for milk she doesn't mess around, there's very rarely any spillage at all. I think she takes her milk more seriously than water or juice!

rosie only has the two bottom teeth as well and I think it's hampering her on the solids front because there's so much she can't quite eat yet. lots of people seem to have their LOs on things like pieces of fruit etc, but unless it's really squishy rosie can't eat it because she can't take a bite, which is frustrating. She really wants to feed herself more but can't bite properly yet.

she also seems to be going through a bit of a picky stage and is really not into eating vegetables 9other than cooked carrot) as finger foods, she'd much prefer pieces of toast (but won't eat mini sandwiches or untoasted bread as of last week) or baby biscuits. I think there's possibly some action on the rest of the teeth so it might be that she's seeking out foods which feel good on her gums??

GvackM that's so funny you mentioned the water spilling out of the mouth... my dd just started doing this about 3 days ago... and I notice that my dd is only a couple of days older than yours!  How funny, it must be developmental at a particular age  ???  I don't know what to do about it either, so I don't do anything in the hope she'll just stop one day.  I think maybe she likes the way it feels and it's different or something, who knows with these crazy babies  :P

Thanks everyone for your help, I went to the store last night to get lots of different foods so I'm going to try some new things over the next few days and see if I can get her eating more.  Also I cut down her two middle bottles by half, so I think in a couple of days she might notice that she's hungrier  :-\

I have a quick question about the food listed in the routines. How pureed are the fruit and eggs and veggies and meat? My lo is 9.5 months and has 6 front teeth, so I'm really curious. Thanks!

Jenna's Mom - We dont use the high chair all that much except for the 3 "true" meals of the day.   For a snack, I will put cherios or Kix in a little "dish-like" trough in her toys nad she takes them from there.  She has a water cup out all day and we will give her bites of fruit as a snack.  I WILL use the HC for some snacks - but definitly not bottles.   We do all bottles holding her.....I never thought to do any different.

Spectra - The front teeth really mean not too much in terms of puree - they dont chew with those teeth - they cut.  OUr DD had 8 teeth at 6 months and now at 11.5 she has nearly 12.  we were never pureeing much....chopped really small - and let her finger feed.  She HATED the soft stuff - so we were done with that really fast.

Good luck

Hi Spectra!
My LO is almost a year now, but when he was 9.5 mos, we were really working on getting him chewing. I would give him chunks of soft food and watch really carefully until he got the hang of it. For example, I'd give him ripe pears cut into peices he couldn't possibly choke on, and well cooked peas, a chopped up turkey meatball, etc. until he got really good at chewing. We pretty much stopped pureeing food at 10 months, giving him chopped or mashed food to follow up his dinner of finger foods.
HTH.

Here is Sophia Isabella's feeding routine at 10 and a half months old. We mainly feed her organic foods and we are slowly transitioning into more finger foods (she doesn't seem too interested right now) and also the chunkier varieties...though she still enjoys her purees and still prefers stage 2 when she is teething badly.

7:30 am wake and BF
8:30 am - 4 oz. of baby food with protein (turkey and chicken with veggies); 1 mashed   banana; 3-4 tbs. cream top whole milk yogurt mixed with 3 tsp. apple sauce. OR in place of the banana and yogurt she will have half an avocado mixed with 3 tbs. yogurt and applesauce.
11:30 am - BF; 6 oz. of baby food (veggies and apple yogurt oatmeal)
3:30 pm - BF; 2 wagon wheels or 1/2-1 teething biscuit for snack or cut up cheese (though she doesn't seem to enjoy eating these..just plays with them).
6:30 pm - BF then 6 tbs. baby oatmeal cereal with water and pureed fruit; 2-4 oz. of green veggies; 5-6 tbs. cream lined yogurt and apple sauce.
7:30 pm - Bed

Any advice on how to start transitioning to regular food?  What varieties can one start feeding a 10 month old?  Should we avoid certain spices (i.e. onion and garlic powder; herbs; and salt and pepper? I have started having her take little bites off my toast and butter and also a bit of cheese but am quite wary and unsure of what is best to feed lo and maintain a healthy balance of vitamins and nutrition.

Thanks
Ana

I haven't seen it yet but a few friends have told me to check out the new nutritian article in the newest Parents mag.  My one friend said she read within it that around this time our los have super sensitive taste buds which is why they start to get picky and bored with bland so it is a good time to start cooking with more seasonings and herbs, just watch out for salt!  With DS, I just kept putting finger foods on his tray at meal times and eventually he got the hang of it to the point that this is how he wants to eat and aside from breakfast, he won't let us feed him with a spoon!  Sometimes, he will let us feed him off of a "grown up" fork, though.  ::)  I am very impressed with how much your lo eats!  I am always worried now that DS insists on feeding himself that he gets enough but I just let him eat until he starts playing with the food on his tray!

Hi everyone!

My lo is almost 10 months and this is her feeding schedule:

7am BF
7:45 Breakfast - Cheerios to pick at, Vegemite toast, Baby muesli mixed with milk.
11:00 Snack - Biscuit or fruit with water from sippy cup
12:30 Lunch - cut up fruit, small tub yogurt, thin rice cake.
1:15 BF
3:30 Snack - biscuit or fruit with water from sippy cup
5:00 Dinner - cut up cheese, veggies, meat.
6:30 BF

She is not too interested in the BF after lunch and the one at night is becoming a bit of a struggle so I am going to start offering her formula in a cup with morning and afternoon tea and slowly start to wean her off the breast.

Thanks, Vicki

BabyBsMommy - thanks for the tip on the new Parents mag.!  I guess I am just a little wary starting her on regular food simply because I gotten so used to the prepared baby foods in jars...and am a bit imtimidated.  So I am also thinking of taking the leap of cooking her food and freezing here soon.

You are right...my lo eats quite a bit nowadays.  Believe me, last month was a very different story...between getting her teeth and going on a nursing strike and not eating much solids, I was at my wits end.  Have you or anyone here been giving your lo daily vitamins?  My doctor has never suggested it and I'm not quite sure if it is recommended at all?

Thanks again for the tip and I will try to introduce more finger foods as well. :)

Sophia is 10.5 months old and this is her feeding routine:

6am- Wake and BF
7:30-Breakfast: cheerios on her tray to pick at, toast fingers with fruit spread on it, 4 tblsp of cereal w/ 4 oz of soy milk

*We have recently dropped the 11 AM BF*

Am snack after nap (10:30 or 11am) Yogurt and cheerios or bananna, water in sippy

1pm- Lunch 4tblsp of pastine (homemade soup w/pasta & veggies) and 4tblsp of fruit, sippy with Soy milk, cut up cheese on tray to pick at

3:30 BF  and small snack shortly after ( arrowroot biscuit, goldfish crackers or rice puffs, sippy with h20)

5:00 Dinner 4tblsp toddler jarred baby food & 4tblsp fruit (has started to have table food blended up, depends on what I make for dinner)

6:30 BF

7PM bed

Any suggestions on my routine are welcome! I am always so worried she isnt getting enough (dont we all??) but she was really refusing the 11 am BF and I didnt want to force her, and since we dropped it she nurses well for her other feeds. So I am following her lead and I think it wont be long until we are down to 2 BF a day! Also has anyone else introduced juice yet? I have given her some juice in a regular cup ( 2oz of h20/ 1oz odf juice) and she loves it...

Ana Cristina - We went through a nursing strike at 6 months and 8 months due to teething.  I had weaned him down starting at the end of September to formula through the day and a BF first thing in the morning and before bed.  Before bed started to become a struggle about 3 weeks ago so I changed that to formula and after a few weeks there wasn't much left for him in the morning so I weaned that one, too.  As for vitamins, I only ever gave vitamin D drops which were recommended while breastfeeding but he actually just finished his bottle of them today and I'm going to stop since he is on formula and so many regular foods now.  I think as long as they are getting some food from all of the food groups and breastmilk/formula they are ok but ask your pedi if you are unsure.

Solids are a bit scary, I think we all worry about whether or not they are getting enough but I think they must be since we all worry but most of the lo's seem to be thriving!   ;D

Juice - Have given some apple or pear juice diluted A LOT (we're talking 1 oz mixed with 5 oz of water) in a sippy when he has had a cold or been sick but he actually prefers straight water.

My son is 11 months old and here is his schedule now:

700-730 wake up and bottle 8 oz
830 - Breakfast - yogurt or cereal with 2-3 tbsp fruit
1100-1130 - Bottle 8 oz
1230 - Lunch - vegetables, little meat, fruit
330 - Bottle 8 oz
530 - Dinner: vegetables, fruit
715-730 - Right before bed - Bottle 8 oz

We don't have big success with giving him water between feedings, takes it only if it's mixed with little bit of juice /apple, white grapes or pear/. I also give him finger foods 2-3 times a day just for a bite or two.

Carter is 10 mos and here is his schedule:

7am-wake and bf
8am-1 banana, about 15 puffins cut in half, 3 tbsp yogurt
12:30pm-bf
1pm-steamed veggies, black beans, and pasta
4pm-snack-either 1 slice of cinnamon raisin bread or some graham crackers and raisins
6pm-bf
6:30pm-ground turkey or chicken, steamed veggies, potato wedges

He has water in a sippy through most of these meals and throughout the day.  He used to devour all meals, now he is eating a little bit less for lunch and dinner.  ::) All that wasted homemade food!  >:(

rosie is now 13 months old and she doesn't seem to eat huge amounts at all at the moment.  I think as their growth slows down so does their appetite.

today for lunch she's eaten a piece of (homemade) beef burger approx the size of a US dime (or a 10p in the uk) and a few spoons of mashed potato with spinach (one of her favourties usually), followed by 4 grapes and 4 cherries, and a quarter of a slice of bread.  written down that looks like a lot, but on the plate it didn't!

anyways, she seems to be growing well enough and i expect she'll be hungry and eat loads at tea time.

DS is almost 13 months so I'll do one last post to tell where he's at now....
Here is today...
7am - 7 oz wake up bottle (3oz formula, 4 oz whole milk)
830am - breakfast - 1/2 slice ww toast with cream cheese and sugar free jam, 3 tbsp oatmeal with a bit of mashed banana, 1/2 baby yogurt, 1/2 banana, a few cheerios and water.
1130am - snack - some gerber puffs and freeze dried apples
1230pm - lunch -1 oz chicken, ww macaroni with melted cheese, about 8 green beans, 1/3 of a pear, a few goldfish crackers, water.
200pm - 6 oz bottle before nap (2oz formula, 4 oz whole milk)
400pm - snack - small slice of cheese, a few goldfish crackers and freeze dried apples
515pm - dinner - 1 oz chicken, 1 1/2 perogies, a few flowerets of broccoli mashed with some melted cheese, 8 green beans, 1/4 pear, 1/2 banana, 1 arrowroot cookie and water
715pm - 6 oz bedtime bottle, same as afternoon one

DS is a very good eater right now.  I'm waiting for the pickiness to set in!   When he's teething or has a cold, his appetite diminishes a lot, to the point that he'll eat about the equivalent of one typical meal over a whole day.  He is a VERY active baby, and literally runs around the house every waking minute of the day!

What are moms giving LO's for finger foods?  I've been alternating between diff fruits like bananas, avocados, and even kiwi's, but would like to offer more.  I haven't started giving DD any wheat  yet, so I haven't done the cheerios and things.

My 11 month old's schedule is like this (she weaned from bottle a day ago):

-7:30 - sippy with formula, 2 oz.
-8:00 - breakfast with 4 oz. sippy of formula
-10:30 - 12:30 nap
-12:30 - sippy with formula, 2 oz.
-1:00 - lunch with 4 oz. formula
-3:30-5:30 - nap
-5:30 - dinner with 4 oz. sippy of formula
-7:30 - bedtime with remainder of sippy from dinner (sometimes doesn't finish)

She won't take anymore formula than that.  She didn't take anymore from the bottle the last week before she was weaned either, so I don't think it's the sippy.
Do you  all think that's enough formula.  I don't give her water or juice so as not to interfere with the formula.  She self-limits her food at meals really well, so it doesn't seem like she's eating too much solids.  She eats very healthfully at mealtimes.

Thanks,

Schwalby

The recommendation is a minimum of 20oz milk until a year old, but that doesn't all have to be milk itself, some of it could be full-fat dairy based products such as cheese, yogurt, custard, rice pudding, savoury white or cheese sauce etc, so get some of these into dd's diet to supplement her formula

Your routine looks great - what an amazing napper :D

My DD is 9 1/2 months old and here is her routine

4 a.m if she wakes up that early 8oz bottle
7 a.m 1/4 cup cereal, 3 tbs yogurt and 2tbs prunes 4oz bottle
9 a.m 4oz bottle, handful of cheerios or banana or some other fruit
10 a.m nap
11:30-12:00 p.m 4tbs meat dish with veggies, 2-3 tbs fruit 4oz bottle
2:00 p.m 4oz bottle with snack
2:30 p.m nap if she will go down which is not often
4-4:30 p.m 4tbs meat dish with veggies, 2-3 tbs fruit 4oz bottle
6:00 p.m 4oz bottle
7:00 p.m bedtime
She still wakes some nights at 10p.m - 1 a.m for an 6-8oz bottle. She is eating a lot but is still on the lower end of the weight scale. She is very active though. There are some days I can't get her to eat anything she is teething quite often though, she already has 6 and is getting 3 more.

Hi All,

My DD is 11 months old and her routine is as follows:

6.15am - wake & play in cot
7am - Formula bottle - 6 to 7oz
8.30am - Handful of cheerios(finger food) Porridge & purred Pear or Apple
9.30 - 10.30 Nap
11am - Snack of fruit and drink of squash
12.30pm - Sandwich (Cheese, Turkey, Tuna etc), Yogurt & Fruit
1.30pm - 2.30pm Nap
3.15pm - Formula bottle - 6 to 7oz
5.15pm - Meat & Veg dinner & Fromage Frais
6.15pm - bath
6.30pm - Formula bottle - 6 to 7oz
7pm - Sleep

I do have a question, there has been a few times now that she's been extremly sick after her 6.30pm bottle and I'm wondering if I'm giving her too much volume in the afternoon/evening.

Should I change the 3.15pm bottle to a snack and drink?  Would she still be getting sufficient milk?

It's not nice for her getting so sick and even worse for me trying to clean it up as it goes everywhere.....

Thanks
Dawn

Well, I always say there's no rush to drop bottles, your lo is having the minimum recommended amount of formula as it is, so I wouldn't reduce it any more - milk is still the primary source of nutrition until 12 months, so if anything needs limiting, I'd reduce the solid food :-\

Check out this recent link, the poster had a similar problem, altho her lo was younger than yours:

Thanks for the advice, yesterday went a bit better as I tried to give sufficient gaps between bottles and solids.  What I did was put her formula in her sippy cup at 3pm, she did only take 50ml.  In total yesterday in formula she had 390ml and she had cheese, yogurt and fromage frais so I think on the dairy side she was probably on track.  She was a bit restless last night but I didn't look for food so I think it was just one of those nights.

What I'm going to do is offer 100ml in her sippy cup at 11am and 3pm for the next few days and see how that does.

My health visitor said I should only be giving DD 2 bottle per day now, first thing and before bed so I thought I'd try the sippy cup for milk during the day.  Can I give cows milk as a drink yet or is it best to wait until 12 months?

Thanks Dxxx

Hello,

could do with some help with dd's feeding routines - she's 11 months. Our routine at the moment is:

5.30 - wake  ::)(plays in cot)
6.00 - bf- used to be 10-15 minutes but the last 2 weeks she's fed for 30-40mins when I take her off and she isn't happy about it!
7.15 - breakfast
9.00-10.30 - nap
10.30 - formula 6-7oz
12.00 - lunch
2.00-2.45ish - nap
3.00- formula 6-7oz
5.00 - dinner
6.30/45 - bf- used to be 10-15 mins now 30ish mins
7.00 -bed

She eats very little solids at mealtimes, except for breakfast when she eats loads. I haven't worried over it as she has a good amount of milk feeds as well as milk in porridge & other dairy. Any ideas as to why the bf times have suddenly increased so much? Should I start offering solids breakfast before bf?  Now she's nearing one I want her to eat more solids but not sure how to go about milk reduction - do I just drop the mid-morning feed or reduce amount of milk?

Any advice gratefully received

I still wouldn't rush to drop any milk feeds, it sounds like you are doing brilliantly, and milk is still what dd needs most of until 12 months, and your routine is great :D

Trust your lo's appetite re the milk solids balance, are you still offering purees or does dd have a mix of finger foods and purees, or is she totally self-feeding? Perhaps a change of how the food is offered might encourage her interest a bit more :-\

Also, are there other differences between breakfast and the other, less popular mealtimes, eg. do you eat together at breakfast but not at lunch or tea? Or is she progressively more tired as the day goes on and therefore less tolerant? What do you offer at breakfast that she might prefer to her other meals?

Just some thoughts...!

Thanks for your reply Freya's mum,

DD is almost totally on finger foods now and for the occasional mushy meal, like porridge or fruit puree, she tends to attempt spoon feeding herself or uses her fingers anyway - we have very messy mealtimes  ;D

Thanks for the other thoughts, will try having a snack with her at supper time which is the only meal she eats alone and look at her menu as well.

Hello -

Just wanted to post my routine for my 10.5 mo old twins and welcome any feedback.  Lately I'm getting resistance to finger foods and solids and we have regressed back to mainly purees for meals.  I think this is due in part to the fact that they have discovered how to drop their food to the dog and they think this is more appealing than putting it in their mouth!  ;)  Needless to say, the dog has been banished from the dining room during mealtime now...and it helps a bit.  Anyhow, here is our average routine:
7am wake and 6oz bottle (formula)
8am breakfast - handful of Cheerios, 6oz apple puree mixed with oatmeal
9:30am snack - handful of Goldfish crackers
9:45-11:15am nap
11:15am 6oz bottle (formula)
12:30pm lunch - 4oz yogurt, toast with cream cheese, a few slices of pears (or puree if not eating pieces)
2:30pm snack - 1/2 banana (lately the banana is getting spit back out at me though), avocado pieces (again, being spit out lately), or handful of Goldfish
3:00-4:00pm nap
4:00pm 6oz bottle (formula)
5:30pm dinner - 4oz pureed version of whatever we are eating, toast, 3oz veggie puree, a couple of bunny grahams or animal crackers
6:30pm 6oz bottle (formula)
7:00pm bedtime

A couple of concerns: I offer them water in a sippy at all meals and one has caught on to how the sippy works (he drinks probably no more than 2oz throughout the day though), the other hasn't really figured it out.  I've tried putting formula in the sippy to transition them over and I'm usually met with complete refusal so I end up pouring it in a bottle.  Not sure how to tackle the bottle-to-sippy switch.  I used to think it was a necessity to have them solely on sippies by 1 year but now I just don't see how that is going to happen...

Also, I don't want to set myself up for bad behaviors in the future, so are they old enough to know that if they don't eat a lot at meals that they can make up for it by eating more Goldfish at snacktime?  The reason I ask is that it seems their appetite fluctuates and when they eat less at their meals they tend to want more snack before naptime.  Is this possible or is it all in my head?  I'm just so concerned about not raising unhealthy "snackers" that crave processed food.  They will also spit out the banana or avocado and then I'll give them Goldfish and I know this is bad because it's just teaching them that if they refuse the healthy stuff I'll give them the crackers instead.  So I'm going to stop this practice.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Lindsay

Tbh Lindsay, I think you've answered yourself :D your routine looks fine, still plenty of milk - my youngest is nearing 2 and we are just beginning to wean off a bottle - in her mind a sippy was for water, a bottle for milk, now she's drinking water from a beaker and has mastered a straw, we're going to gradually ditch the bottles and put the milk in the beaker too!

As for your concerns about reinforcing their avocado refusal, I think you know you're right already :)

It'll be fine,

I wouldn't worry about the bottles either.  I was in a panic for DS to drop his when "everyone else" was but after 4 days straight of refusing to drink out of the sippy when we went cold turkey, we went back to bottles.  He was much the same as Ax's lo, water/juice(a treat) out of the sippy, milk out of the bottle (and only would ever take it from one kind of bottle).  We actually just kicked the bottle 3 weeks ago at 2 years, 4 months - he was getting it in his room right when he got up in the AM and before bed in the evening (brushed teeth afterwards).  He started chewing on the nipples for comfort and we got sick of replacing them so one morning I said, "No bottle today, there are no nipples left."  I braced myself for a fit and he replied, "Ok."  Floored, I asked, "Do you want it in a sippy or in a straw cup?"  He answered, "In a straw cup." and that was that.  I still worry he doesn't get enough milk because some days he isn't too interested in it but he has milk on his cereal and eats milk, cheese, drinks a few oz of calcium fortified OJ here and there so I'm sure he's fine.  Sorry to digress!

Hi, my lo is 11.5 months old now so I thought I would post his routine before he reaches a year.

6am - wake up
6.30am - bottle (10oz)
7.30am - Breakfast - Toast then cereal mixed with fruit
9am-11am - nap
11am - snack - 2 mini rice cakes and half a banana, 3oz cows milk from sippy
1pm - lunch - meat and veg, followed by fruit, water from sippy
2pm-3.30pm - nap
3.30pm - snack - breadstick and chunks of cheese, 3oz cows milk from sippy
5.30pm - dinner - meat and veg with rice or pasta, followed by yogurt, water from sippy
6.45pm - bottle 12oz
7pm - bedtime

We have only been on this routine for just under a week but so far it is working well. Before we didn't have the snacks with cows milk in the am and pm but we decided to introduce them as he was eating his meals very early eg 11.30 lunch and 4pm dinner, and we wanted him to start eating at around the same time as us now that we are all eating the same food. He has also dropped his afternoon bottle this month - he started refusing his bedtime bottle so I dropped the afternoon bottle and it worked really well. Up until that point he was having 3x7oz bottles but now he has increased his bottles to a 10oz am bottle and a 12 oz pm bottle.

Ds is 10mo and this is his rough feeding routine:

7am BF
8am cereal with fruit
10.30am BF
12 noon lunch - sandwiches and fruit (sometimes a sip of water too)
3pm BF and banana
5.30pm dinner (usually what we're having)
6.15pm BF

As you can see we're usually having 4 BFs a day still... although if we're out/have visitors, often the 3pm feed doesn't really happen.  He is a big boy, and I'm not at all concerned with his solids intake (sometimes he eats heaps, other times not so much).  By his age, both my dd's were down to 3 feeds... wondering if I should do the same for him, and maybe he'd feed better???  I haven't given him much practice with a sippy cup, so not sure how much water he could actually consume.

I thought i would post our routine.  Riley is 10.5 mths, and at his last dr. appointment he hadn't put on much weight since his previous visit (although he has always been smaller) so the dr recommended i feed him solids first then bottle which he is fine with.

7:30 - wake and play
8 - cereal or toast and fruit, water from a sippy
9:30 - 7 oz bottle
10:30-11:30 - nap
12 - lunch :meat, fruit, veg, cheese, water
1:30 - 7 oz bottle
2:30-3:30 - nap, then snack of fruit or cheerios
5 - supper: veg, meat whatever, water
7 - bath, 7 oz bottle and bed

He won't take his formula from a sippy, but i'm hoping when i switch him to cows milk he will.  Lately he has been refusing more pureed foods, and can't use a spoon yet, so he's mostly on finger foods.  I'm running out of finger food ideas that won't have my whole house covered in food, so if you have any suggestions pls let me know.

Denise, I always say that there is no rush to drop the milk feeds because milk is the most important source of nutrition until baby is a year, but if a 3 feed a day routine improves ds's overall milk and solid consumption, go with it :)

Blitz, check out the Recipes section for loads of great Finger Food ideas (the Finger Foods for Young Babies thread has ideas that would suit older babies too).

My LO just turned 10 mo this week  :o  She loves to feed herself, and I'm am afraid she's starting to lose interest already in baby foods!

Here is her feeding routine, dropped one bottle one week ago:

6:30 - bottle (8 oz.)
8:30 - breakfast - about 1/4 cup cereal mixed w/2-3 oz. formula; 1/2 jar or so fruit (stage 2 size); juice mixed w/water from sippy; cheerios and/or a piece of toast if not liking the cereal
11:00 - snack - cheerios; pieces of fruit or veggie; bottle (6-8 oz.)
12:30/1:00 - lunch - about 1/4 cup cereal mixed w/2-3 oz. formula; 1/2 jar or so veggie or fruit (stage 2 size); juice mixed w/water from sippy; cheerios
3:00 - snack - crackers; pieces of fruit; cheerios (usually some combination of these); sippy
5:30 - dinner - the past 2 days, she's had what we've had for dinner.  The night before we had chicken; stuffing & peas, last night we had a beef roast and green beans.  she had some beef, but mostly left over chicken & peas.
7:00/7:30 - bottle (8 oz.)

At what age can we consider moving totally away from the jarred/pureed baby foods & cereal???

My LO is almost 12 months so thought I would share his routine before he outgrows the group.

7 - Bottle 8 oz
9:30 - Cereal, waffle, or cereal bar
12:30 - Yogurt rice, maccoroni and cheese, or grilled cheese AND fruit yogurt
3 - Bottle 8 oz
5:30 - Whatever we are having
7:30 - Bottle 8 oz

He is struggling with finishing his bedtime bottle so we are thinking about dropping the afternoon bottle and replacing it with a calcium rich snack.  I want to try and wait til his first birthday before doing it though.  We'll see how it goes

My LO is 11 months old and here is what we are currently doing (we just moved her 1st bottle to after breakfast and she seems to take in much more milk this way)

7:30am breakfast - 1/2 eggo waffle and 2-3oz cut up fruit
10:00/10:30am - 9oz formula (used to have this first thing in the morning but would only take about 5-6 oz then, now she takes 9oz!!)
12:00pm lunch - 4 oz yogurt and 1/2 sandwhich w/o crust, usually peanut butter, cheese & tukey, or just cheese
2:30pm - 9oz formula
4:00pm snack - is always small, usually crackers, popcorn, or a 1/2 banana
5:30/6:00pm dinner - has what we are eating, lasagna, spaghetti, rice, or whatever is on the menu
7:00/7:30pm - 7-8oz formula

This is a good day.  She doesn't always take so much formula and some days won't eat much at dinner at all!!!

Hi all!  I was questioning if my DD2 was eating the right amounts and still having bottles at the right time but she seems to be doing about the same as others her age.
DD2 is 10.5 mo old
630 bottle
745 half waffle, two strawberries or some blueberries maybe 1/4 cup of oatmeal with a dash of cinnamon.
1030 bottle - I offer 6 but she takes about 4-5 oz
1200 lunch- 1/4 peas and carrots, chicken, spinach, pear with oatmeal, apple bits.
3pm bottle 4-5 oz
445 dinner probably same as lunch but I also give her about a 1/4 cup of oatmeal with fruit puree and cinnamon.   Lately she hasn't been finishing it.
615 bottle almost 6oz
630 bed

Lately she hasn't been too interested in the 3pm bottle

Will they do egg (dry fried or scrambled or omlette) and/or low salt/low sugar baked beans with toast for breakfast?
Or pancakes with fruit or veg pureed in the mix?
What about rice with some minced turkey/chicken with veggies and sauce like a Bolognese or chili con Carne with no chili? I was surprised K would eat this at this age. He also went through a stage or refusing cereals.

Hamish is 11 months old and this is what he's on:

7am- Breast feed
8:30 (or so)- 1 weetbix with milk, 2 Tbsp natural yoghurt, piece of fruit, some 'oops'- like low sugar cheerios...
10.00 (or so)- snack: a cruskett, an egg.. something non messy- a sip of water (as much as he;ll have)
12:00- Lunch: A banana sandwich, or tuna sandwich, or a few mini muffins, sometimes also some cheese, another piece of fruit. Water offerred again
1:00- Breast feed
3:00- Snack- Cruskett or 2
6:00- Dinner- meat such as chicken, some vegetables if he'll eat them (will often hide them), rice or pasta some nights and some fruit at the end.
7pm: Breast feed

Hamish is JUST starting to get fussy with the middle of the day feed and sometimes will have it as one feed between the midday feed and the BT feed. I think we'll be down to morning and BT feed by 12 months...

I wanted to post our routine for those whos LO's feed more often (we are still on an every 3.5hr BF schedule at almost 11m old)... so that you can see it's still doable even when they are almost toddlers and transitioning their naps at the same time

6:45 WU
7:00 BF
8:00 Breakfast
9:30 Snack
10:30 BF
