Title: WHY IS THIS HAPPENING ALL OF A SUDDEN?
Post by: Grace's Mom on June 10, 2006, 08:39:35 am
My little 10 week old always was able to fall right back to asleep after she woke up for a night feeding.  All of a sudden, this past week or so, she wakes up, eats, and then seems to be wide awake.  Sometimes she will still be asleep, we will put her down in her crib and 20 minutes later she is up crying.  I don't know why she is all of a sudden becoming more and more awake in the middle of the night.  Any suggestions as to what could be causing this?  Nothing in her schedule has changed...she is on a 3 hour EASY.  She eats at 7, 10, 1, 4 and 7...no dream feed because it was making things worse not better.  She usually wakes up once to eat and once in awhile wake up an hour or so before her 'wake up time,'  so I try putting her back to bed (if she has under an hour left I end up putting her in the swing - i know i shouldn't but it's what works).  During the day she is usually awake for an hour or so and then down for her nap, which can take up to a half hour to put her down. She fights it big time, usually.

Thank you for your incite.

Melissa

DS went through a stage like this too.  It's frustrating at the time but, for him, it eventually passed.  Does pat/shh work for your lo?  This helped alot for us.

Do you keep stimulation to a minimum when she wakes?  I found that if I could get in there before he got too wound up it would help.  I would also keep him swaddled, and not talk to him so that he wouldn't get the idea that it was time to get up.  HTH  :)

We are working on figuring out pat/shh.  We have not received the book in the mail yet but have learned about it by reading through the web site.

When she starts to cry we go in immediately and we keep the lights out.  We pick her up and feed her with out talking or anything like that.  We only swaddle her for nap time.  She usually does excellent without being swaddled at night. From day one we have always kept night time quiet and with very little stimulation.

Hopefully this will pass.  She is so funny because she is just cooing away.  It's cute but I am just thinking please go back to sleep.  Othertimes she is fussy and crying so who knows.

Thanks.

Hi Melissa,

Ellen B already gave you great advice, but I just want to add that you should make sure you are not making eye contact with your lo when you go in at night. That can be very stimulating for them and also make them think it's time to get up. It's hard not to, but believe me if you don't look them in the eye it will help. That and pat/shhhh should help you out a lot.
