Title: Stopped going to sleep at night
Post by: esthere on June 14, 2006, 21:42:47 pm
I am really hoping someone can help, the last couple of weeks have felt like its all falling apart at the seams here.
Up until now Harry has been an amazing sleeper, but for the last ten days he is going into the cot but not getting to sleep until 10pm !!!
Here is his day:
Awake 7.45am (sometimes a bit later)
Nap 1pm until 215pm
Bedtime 7pm.
We tried to cut out the nap, and he fell asleep at 5pm before dinner, I still think he needs a nap because he goes straight to sleep when I put him down for it. If we do not start the bedtime routine at 6.30pm, he gets very upset and tired.
All I think of doing tommorow is reducing the nap to 45mins and having it earlier maybe at 12.15pm.
I have tried to think of anything thats changed , we have had extremely hot weather for the ten days, also he developed excema but that is cleared now and does not seem to bother him.
I would really appreciate any thoughts, He is a true angel baby and I really want to get him back on track.

If you look down at some of the other posts on the board, you will notice that several of us with approximately 2-yo kids are going through the exact same thing! My dd has been impossible to get down before 9 these past few months. I don't know if her sleep needs have diminished or if it's a molar thing, but in our case it's probably less sleep needed (it's been going on at least 4 months I think). I don't have any advice, but I'm right there with you!

I'm sure its not what you want to hear but what he's doing is completely normal! Henry has been going to sleep late since the time change - what was that - April?? He used to go to sleep at about 7:30pm. Now he's up most nights until well after 8pm, sometimes even closer to 9pm. Its frustrating but he's in his crib playing with evey opportunity to sleep so I just leave him be. I figure he'll sleep when he's tired. I keep saying that you can't make them sleep, you can only give them opportunities to sleep.

I would not suggest dropping his nap or even cutting it short. It doesn't seem to make any difference to Henry other than to make him overtired if he skips his nap. If he naps at all, he's up late. If he doesn't nap, he crashes as soon as I put him down. I figure its better for him to have the nap to make up for the times that he's up late so I let him sleep (within reason - I wake him at 2:45pm if he's not up yet).

HTH!

Thank you both,
I felt so bad after posting last night because I did read the other recent posts and realised I was not alone !!!
The only thing I am going to try is to move the nap from 1pm to noon, I can't give it up because he goes straight to sleep and he really needs it to get through the day.
Like Henrys mama , he is still happy to go to the cot for seven he just sings , watches out for birdies etc !! and I find it hard to listen to him on the monitor, will be reiminding myself about giving him the opportunities to sleep
I did not want to sound boastfull, but as this is my first sleep problem , I just thought my world was ending, thanks again  :) :) :)

Good for you! I think we're all trying to embrace henrysmama's advice on just providing the best opportunities to sleep and we can't make it happen. I also think the baby monitor is our own worst enemy. We'd probably all be fine putting them in their rooms for bedtime and then just checking before we went to bed - we wouldn't even know they were in there singing away for hours on end! Now who's going to tell my husband...

 ;D ;D ;D ;D
He was asleep by 7.45pm
I can't believe it, all I did was move the nap from 1pm to noon, He was not at all cranky,
I can't thank you both for listening , even if it does not last , I will be better able to cope because of your advice.
PS : Sacmommy: We have only recently turnes off the motion monitor..... we will be a long time turing off the sound  :-

I'm sure I'll have my baby monitor on for years!
