Title: help! dont know what im doing wrong at night! or is it my EASY routine??
Post by: erinsmum36 on June 20, 2006, 08:01:38 am
hi - my LO is 17 weeks old, is almost on 4 hour easy (3 ish from mid afternoon). She has only ever woken once a night for a feed since she was about 5 weeks old, and recently slept thru from 7pm - 6:15ish for 2.5 weeks. During this time I moved her from 3 - 4hour easy as she was never hungry enough on 3 hour. she still slep thru for about 8 days so I guess she was getting enough to eat. On Saturday she woke at 4am for a feed and I felt really dissapointed, but fed her in quiet, and as usual put her back in the cot awake and left - she gets herself back to sleep with no fuss.
the last 3 nights she has woken between 1 and 2:30am for a feed. I wondered if she needed it as she had managed so many nights sleeping thru, so I tried other things but she cried harder and eventually I fed her - she took roughly 10 mins and that was that.
routine is in mid change but is something like this
E 7
A
S 8:30 bed, 10 mins to S
A 10:30
E 10:50
A12:30 or 1 if lucky
S1-? could be an hour, maybe 2
A2 if woken and wide awake
E 3
A
S 5 maybe in pram out for a walk or back in cot, or in car if errands to do (40 mins)
E  kicking around & cf 1
6:10 bath
E 6:30 last cf
S7pm ish

sometimes she is really sleepy after the 11am feed so after 1.5 hours has a 2nd 2 hour nap - is this a sign of something - 4 hour of naos between 7am ish and 2:30 seems like a lot to me!

im not sure about the cf cos i think she takes less overall or the same than one feed. Also, i have never done a df as she has always slept thru to after midnight from birth, so prefer to leave her be.
I am trying to get more calories into her during the day but its hard to feed her more if she isnt hungry! I am getting to the point where i am thnking of switching to formula just so i can monitor how much she eats - i used to express but now she takes from both sides at each feed its so much hassle to ge tthe odd 2 ounces, plus its a nightmare trying to get her to take a bottle.
i want to persevere to 6 months but the erratic waking is really frustrating me. I have always fed her when she wakes, because 1. it only happens once a night so i assume she probably is hungry, and 2. i dont df so it seems fair that she might need it, but then again she just did 2.5 weeks without!
sooo confused!
baby weighs 14lbs.

Could she possibly be teething?

My lo is 18 weeks and has just broke two teeth through (thank HEAVENS!) - in the runup it really disrupted his sleep (he would sleep 11-12 hours a night without waking) and messed up his feeds - he would faff about and take ages to actually finish his feed, if he even managed it.

hi - I did wonder as she drools alot and chews everything but so far cant see anything.. I am really worried that I am becoming a habit for night feeds, but on the other hand she always eats something and doesnt object to going back in the cot awake and I leave immediately. I was also told babies feed much more efficiently at night, so even tho she only feeds for 10 mins, she could get a reasonable quantity.
I have fed her well today and instead of clustering at the end, I left it almost 4 hours and she was properly hungry, so looked pretty full at the end. will see what happens tonight and I will check again for pearly whites tomorrow - thanks

drool is a big clue to the teeth, plus stuffing anything into their mouths - my lo drooled for about three weeks before there was even the snifter of atooth.
