Title: Gas causing early wakings
Post by: seniuk2001 on June 25, 2006, 04:46:02 am
Our 11 week old is a very gassy baby.  She will often wake early from her naps and often from night time sleep as well.

I'm wondering if other's who have the same issues think it's okay to give her back her pacifier when she's fussing due to gas at an early wake up.  She'll go down at 9:30 and dream feed at 10:30 or 11, she will occasionally wake at 4:30 or so.  Is that creating a prop or dependency?  I just find that she's able to calm herself down enough that she passes that gas on her own.

Granted, I don't know for certain that she wakes due to gas but since she's gassy all day and all night long, I just assume that.  Other times she sleeps through naps and through at night till 7:00 or 6:30 so I'm pretty sure she's not asking for a feed at that time.

Obviously when she's old enough to not be upset by her gas, then she won't need the paci...

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Leanne

Hello Leanne,

I, too, have a gassy girl!

DH seems to think the DF contributes to the problem since Kelsie is too alseep to give us a burp after DFs.  At times, she seems to do better without the DF.  While she ends up taking a last feeding anywhere between 8 and 9 pm, she'll sleep until 2-3 am, then go back down until  8 or so.  This makes me MUCH happier than staying up until 11 to do DF, then, if the gas doesn't rear it's ugly head, waking at4 or 5 to feed and wanting to stay awake at that un-Godly hour.  I'd much rather wake once at night (or elbow DH until he gets up) than have to be up for the day before 7 am.

If your LO tends to fall back asleep with the pacifier, all I have to say, is CONGRATS!  All 3 of my kids were/are pacifier babies.  They eventually get old enough to find it and put it in their mouths themselves at night... and with my oldest 2, at a certain age, I simply lilmited the pacifier to naps and bed time ONLY... This way, I didn't end up with this big 'ol kid walking around the grocery store with a pacifier hanging out of his/her mouth.  Of course, my almost 3-year-old daugher still MUSt have hers to sleep, she knows she only gets it when she's in her crib.

Something else that may help with the gas.... I found a gripe water called Colic Calm.  When it's given, within minutes, the gas slips out, and baby is happy!  It does have activated charcoal (which from what I understand, is used quite a bit overseas .. I'm in the US.. for stomach issues) so it's black.  It's rather intimidating to give your baby something that looks like that, but I' ve asked every nurse practitioner, pediatrician, and a GI doc that we saw last week, about it and they all said it was completely safe.  The only thing is.. if you give your LO any type of prescription medicine (Kelsie is on Prilosec for reflux), you musn't give it within 2 hours, bc the pourous charcoal will absorb any other medicine and it won't be able to absorb properly.

BTW, Kelsie is 12.5 weeks old now, so my LO and your LO aren't too  far off.

I sure hope some of my rambling helps you.  Bottom line is:  Pacifiers are GREAT!  If it gets LO back to sleep, use it and count your blessings~!!!!!!!!
