Title: hitting leg? health or activity?
Post by: jumblebox on July 15, 2006, 15:18:27 pm
Our almost 4mo DS has recently started hitting his leg, repeatedly.

Is this just a new developmental activity, or is it a possible health issue? We have a ped appt in about a week, so... just wondering if we should be worried or chalk it up to him learning how to hit.

thx,
Lisa

I'd be hazarding a guess that's he's just figured out that his arm moves when he makes it and he can feel the reaction of it against his leg (is he happy enough when he's doing it, not distressed?). They get all sorts of jerky movements when they're figuring out things like that. My dd used to slap her tummy a lot at one stage when she was in the nude and my ds used to lift his legs high and slam them down. Seems painful to us, but these things come and go. :)

My DS punched both his legs at the sides and then kicked his legs repeatedly and very excitingly at this age. He seemed pleased with himself when doing it.  Does you little one do this?  Aisling x

Thanks! That's probably what it is. He's been awfully cranky the past couple days, so we were associating it more with frustration and being upset. Now that I think about it, he's also been hitting ME, and his books when I try to read to him.

Maybe if he hits himself hard enough, he'll figure out it hurts and stop hitting ME.  :P

Thanks again...
