Title: Problem in the total opposite direction of last issue!
Post by: Tonya on July 17, 2006, 23:14:06 pm
I recently posted about Nathan drinking WAY too much milk.

Well, we got the hard spout Nuby's and put away his "babba's", the soft spout Nuby's, on Sat.  Since then the most he has drank was 8 ounces a day! :o

So he went from 40-50 ounces to 8.  He doesn't get calcium from anything else - he'll only eat cheese in Mac and cheese, no yogurt, no green leafy veggies.

I'm teetering on switching back to the old cups...I've just been told, or read, can't remember, that the soft spouts are worse for their teeth and speech, and they shoudl be using hard spout sippy's, or cups with no lids.  He'll drink water from a regular cup, no milk.

What would you do?  Would you switch back?  Or persist?

i'd leave it at least a week as if you swap back after a couple of days it will only be harder later, he has to get used to it, I'd just keep offering him milk when ever you can.
A few days with lower calcium won't make a huge difference... I have days when I struggle to get Aiden to take more than 1 serve of dairy & then days when he will eat so much... my golden rule... look at everything over a week.

E did the same thing when we switched to sippies (although it was from bottles) it did take him a bit to get his comsumption back up but he eventually did(I can't rememberhow long though).

IMO I would persist if you really want to change the cups.

That's the thing, I'm not sure if it's worth it to switch.  Is there really a difference between a soft spout and hard spout?  Their both shaped the same, one is just made of laytex like material, like a bottle nipple.

The soft spout's cup actually is shaped more like a bottle, and I think my personal "embarrassment" if you can call it that, is coming into play when I give him a "bottle" in public.

Geez, I really wish I knew what the right thing to do was.  I don't want him to go off milk because of my personal feelings - I want to be making the right decision, but I don't know how to really find out if there is a difference in the spouts.

kwim?

Will he use a straw cup?  Then you could stop using a sippy all together.

I prefer the hard spout sippy myself cause I found that B will only chew on the soft one and rarely suck but will always suck on the hard one.

He does have one straw cup, but believes that he has to tip it to get water out, and causes quite the mess ;D

I guess I'll leave it a few more days, and see if he comes around.  Otherwise, I might switch back until he gets calcium from somewhere else, or can understand the "big boy" cup concept.

Hey Tonya -

Henry usually drinks from a Playtex sippy with a hard spout but sometimes he gets a cup with a straw. Its taken a lot of time and watching him but he now knows NOT to tip the straw cups or he'll spill. He sometimes forgets but it does get better. And he LOVES LOVES LOVES drinking from a straw.  :D

Tonya, to weigh in on the sippy issue, I agree that it makes no difference if the sippy is hard or soft for speech (which as I have said before, is a really only a theory anyway).  The thing with a sippy is that it uses the oral musculature in a different way than drinking from an open cup, and the theory is that this use of the muscles is not ideal for development.  It makes no difference if the sippy is hard or soft.  So I'd say don't worry about that so much, and if you stick it out and he just won't drink milk from a hard spout sippy, feel free to switch back.  Maybe you could use the Nuby at home and a hard spout sippy out and about?  I hear what you're saying about the "social stigma" of a cup that looks like a bottle.

Another thing-- have you tried giving him an open cup?  Because I was pretty bad at taking my own advice  ::) , Lilah had little practice with an open cup, (except n the bath when she tries to drink the bath water out of her bath toys  :P ), but one day we gave her one and she took it like a pro!  You never know until you try it.  Maybe Nathan will feel so grown up that he'll just go ahead and drink from an open cup, which would limit his milk consumption, and you can offer a Nuby (or other sippy cup) of water for hydration out and about?  The real danger with sippies, much more than speech, is tooth decay.  Only offering water in the sippy would take care of that.

Thanks for weighing in on the sippy - that's kind of what I thought!

He's actually drinking quite well from it now.  He's very good about drinking from an open cup...he whole heartedly believes though that the only thing that should be drank from an open cup is water. :-\

These sippy's for milk are really still like his bottles...he uses them for comfort a lot as well as drinking his milk, and at this point, I don't have a problem with that...I was trying to cut down his milk consumption to a more reasonable level AND get rid of the "bottle looking" sippy's.  So, we've accomplished both, but I do know I have to get him drinking milk from a regular cup as well.

Thanks for making me feel better!! ;D

Yeah, Lilah usually only wants water from an open cup, too.  I'm sure that stems from me initially only offering water in it so the spills weren't so bad... which is actually the same thing that happened with the sippy and was an issue when we were first introducing cow's milk.  Could you entice him to drink from the open cup with something really yummy, like a smoothie or even a milkshake?  You could then slowly dilute it with more milk and less sweet stuff and see if that helps?  Just brainstorming, here-- I did something similar to get Lilah to take milk in the sippy, with drinkable yogurt.

Sabrina, your suggestion is fab.....unforatunately, ds won't drink ANYTHING but water or milk.  No juice, no drinkable yogurt, no smoothies....nothing!! :-\

Once again, my fault....I was told how bad Juice was for their teeth, and that they could fill up on empty calories if they drank too much, so I started offering way too late.  I've even snuck the TINIEST drops in his water, and he'll take one sip and throw it down!! ::)LOL

Oh well, we're good teeth brushers here, so since it's not a big problem for his speech, I think I'll let it alone for now.  With the baby coming soon, I'm just hoping he doesn't try to steal it's bottles!! ;)

Thanks again!!! ;D

Lilah's not a big juice fan, either... no big loss if you ask me.  But she does like smoothies, and if we go out for Indian, she'll drink nearly my entire mango lassi herslef (though that and a few peas are all she'll consume at the meal!), so I order her her own now!
