Title: Transitioning to 1 nap-nervous to move up bedtime
Post by: TDR'smom on August 02, 2006, 00:13:41 am
Hi all,

We are in the process of transitioning DS to 1 nap.  We started about 7 days ago.  The problem I am having is the inconsistency in the length of the nap.  It can range anywhere from 1 hour-3 hours.  Following is our typical schedule.

6:30AM- Wake
7:30AM-Breakfast
10AM-Snack (little energy boost)
11:30-Lunch
Nap time begins anywhere between Noon-1PM
Naps any where from 1 hour-3 hours
3:30PM-Snack
6:00PM-Dinner
7:30PM-8PM-Bath, Bottle, Bedtime

If he wakes up early from his nap, it is very difficult to keep him up till 7:30PM.  Also, he gets really, really cranky in the late afternoon because he is tired.  We are nervous about putting him to bed any earlier for fear of early wakings.  We are pretty sure this is what will happen from previous experience in tweaking his schedule.

Not really sure what my question is  :-[ :-[ :-[  Just kind of frustrated and looking for any feedback...

TIA

Let me say first that inconsistency with nap lengths when first switching to one nap is very common. It will get better once he's used to it.

I would move his nap a little earlier. Henry is older and has been on one nap for a long time and he sleeps until 7am pretty much every day but his nap is almost always 12pm. It may help lengthen his nap consistently, which will help with that evening tiredness.

As for moving his bedtime earlier, you won't know until you try it. Especially on those days when he has a 1 hour nap, he really needs an early bedtime to make up for that lost sleep.

I would tweak his schedule so its more like

6:30am - wake
12:00pm - nap
6:30-45pm - bedtime

HTH!

Thanks Sarah!   :) :)

I'll try not to fret about his inconsistent lengths of naps and will move his bedtime up a little.
