Hi all
I have noticed that at the moment lots of people need help and advice regarding adding pictures as an avatar.
So here are some instructions that just might help...
Almost any photo or picture can be added as an avatar (the picture that is under your user name) so long as it is not too big.
The picture needs to be no bigger than 120 pixels wide and 160 pixels tall and no more than 100kb in file size. You can resize photos with a lot of photo software and there are a range of freely downloadable photo resizers available on the internet. There is a post in the photo gallery about those.
If you have problems with resizing pics please feel free to send them by email to me at helen@pippin7.freeserve.co.uk and I will be happy to do them for you. I usually email them back to you or might post them in the this thread for you. If I post them in this thread
you can save them to your computer by clicking on the name just below the pic and then use the folowing instructions to help you add it as an avatar..
If you go towards the top of the page you will see a button marked profile.. press that...
Then you need to look to the left and in the second box down (the modify profile box).. select " forum profile information"
Then you select - "I will upload my own picture" .. then press browse and select which picture you want as your avatar from your computer.
Once you have found it and added it scroll to the bottom and press the change profile button.
If you need more help shout!

Yay, thanks Helen, your so clever!! Is it to tricky to explain how you make your avatar show lots of different pics?! I noticed yours was doing it earlier!! Don't worry if its to hard to explain xxx :-*
-
To have an avatar that is a picture show of lots of pictures you need photoshop software.. instructions are in the photogallery..
BUT, if like me you don't have photoshop the alternative route is to speak nicely to Gareth one of the admins and he may have time to make you one! Thats how I did it!
H xxx
-
He he he! Ill look at the thread! Don't really know Gareth that well so might be abit cheeky asking him!! Thank you again x
-
Oh go on Clare.. he doesn't bite.. in fact he's quite a sweety and I am sure he wouldn't mind....

Helen...
I am sorry to bother you with this...but I was wondering if you had any advice. I have never had any problem uploading my pics and changing out my avatars. All of the sudden I can't upload a new one. I have tried resizing it to smaller and it still won't upload. Just curious if you may know how I can fix it? Thanks for you time! I know you are really busy!
:) Shelby
-
Never too busy to help!
Can you either post the pic you want here or e mail it to me at the address in the first post and I will take a look for you xxx

Hi helen....
Here is a picture. I have tried it w/ numerous different pictures and I go to browse, find one I like and click upload, but nothing happens. It doesn't tell me it's too big or anything. I have never had trouble with this before :-[ :-\
Thank you for your help!
-
You are having probs as the site used to resize pics automatically.. it's not doing so at the moment as we are on a temp server so pics have to be resized manually.
I will resize your pic for you now and repost it back in this thread xxx
H xx
-
Here you go.. instructions for adding are in the first post xxx

Thank you VERY much Helen!
Hope Willy is over his mashed potatoe break-out!
Have a great night!!
Thanks a million!
Shelby :) :) :)

Helen- I know how to change my avatar but it won't do it today. The right pic comes up when I browse but when I click on change profile, nothing happens. Still same old pic???
Is there a glitch? Never had any problems before...???
Laura

Hi Laura,
I'm away at my parent's house at the mo and I havent got my computer.. just their incredibly slow one lol... sooo can I recommend that you pm Gareth and see if he can help you until I return xxxx
Helen xx
-
Laura...
That is the same problem I was having. I knew how to do it but it wouldn't upload. Helen said that it is b/c the temporary sever isn't automatically resizing them like the old system did. I tried resizing my pic and it still wouldn't work. :-\ :-\
-
I just tried again now...oh well.. I like the pic..I don't mind looking at it for the next 10 years :P
-
If yall post the pic you want here through the additional options - I can give a go at making it the appropriate size!

I'm having the same problem, but havent had the problem before. I try to upload a new photo, but when I try to save the new details, nothing changes.
-
I've sorted it for you :)
There is a problem with the software at present. It will not re-size any oversize photos. So any pictures that are required for avatars have to be re-sized manually.
For a Portrait photo that means the dimensions have to be Max. Height-165 Pixels Max. Width-120 Pixels, and for a Landscape photo Max. Height 90Pixels Max. Width 120Pixels, and a Square photo will be Max.Height&Width of 120Pixels.
Remember when using your re-sizing software to ensure that your dimensions are in pixels and not in cm's or inches :)
-
Thanks for your help! Much appreciated x
-
K...tried again. highest compression wiht jpeg and still won't work. when i click change profile, nothing happens still :(
-
Hiya

Here you are xxx
-
my turn ;D . I can usually change avatars no problem but today it doesn't want to do it for me :( . I browse for the resized pic i want and then hit change profile but it comes up with the same pic i have as an avatar now ??? .
p.s is this site running really slow today or is it my computer ? i have run different programmes but still no different
-
Nadia unfortunately we've had a few problems with a hacker and while Andy is sorting things out we can expect a few things to be a litte bit wobbly. The site is temporarily a little slow and there may be probs with avatars etc. Don't worry it'll all be right as rain soon xxx
Helen x
-
o.k thanks for that , at least i know it's not just me then .
-
Thanks Helen! Glad to know it's not me too! ;)

Hello!
Jahmum can you please send your picture again as I don't seem to have received it.
Helen@pippin7.freeserve.co.uk
Thanks

Helen- don't mean to bother you as I am not a complete computer spaz but I have sized my pic down to the lowest compression and it's still saying its too large...
Suggestions?? (other than having you do them all the time..)
I don't have photoshop here..but I do have it at home..I just didn't want to load it on my work pc...
I am using Dell Image Expert...and I have the options to save as low med high..compression...
L :)
-
It's not a just a question of compression, it's a question of actual dimension size. The picture must be no larger than 165 pixels high, and no wider than 120 pixels wide. As a rule, if you make your picture that small then it will be under the 100kb max filesize (in kbs) by default.
So a portrait pic would have the dimensions of 165pixels high x 120pixels wide. A landscape pic would be 90pixels high x 120 pixels wide, and a square picture would need to be 120pixels x 120 pixels. It always helps to see if you resizing software has a 'sharpening' feature that will sharpen pictures once they've been resized, this helps reduce blurriness. Photoshop has this under Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen.
:)

Thanks Gareth xxxx
Lola - send me the pic if you like and I will sort it xxx
Helen xxxx

Thanks Gareth..I think I might bring in photoshop next week and sort it then. I hate bothering you Helen..like mothers don't have enough on their plates!! (Daddy's too ;))
I get the dimension thing now..but mine all seem HUGE...we'll see what the program brings..I will try to resize..not compress....
Hmm...sounds like something fun :-\

Ok, did this, (and I have done this before with my last pic) why is it so grainy? :(
-
why is it so grainy? :(
Check your JPEG compression settings. Not sure how you'd access them as I don't know which software you are using, but the filesize(not dimension size) for that avatar is extremely low. You could try resizing your original pic again, but try with your jpeg compression set to maximum or 100%. So long as the filesize ends up below 100k you'll be fine.
Let me know if you need further help :)
-
Yeah, I did that. The first time the compression size was down and then I tried again with the compression at 100% :-\ I cropped a pic and it was grainy from the time I pasted it into a new window. I am using MGI Photosuite. If I get a chance, I'll play with it later. Thanks!
-
Is the new window you're pasting into the same size as your original photosize? If so that could give you a grainy effect because the cropped portion of your photo is being expected to fill the same amount of space as your original full-size photo. If that is happening then even when you do resize the cropped photo the graininess will remain.
If you'd like me to have a go using your original photo then just send it to mgbull@hotmail.co.uk once I'm done we can compare notes if I manage to produce a non-grainy avatar :)
-
Is that offer still there G? My new pic is grainy too. :-\

Is that offer still there G? My new pic is grainy too. :-\
Of course, it would be a pleasure :) Just send your original pic (or pics if you want a rotating avatar) to mgbull@hotmail.co.uk :) :)
