Title: What do you keep around the house?
Post by: JennŠ on August 20, 2006, 14:59:44 pm
One of my late night thoughts: What foods do you always have around the house for your lo?   Part insomniac curiosity, part looking for ideas for Charlotte.  Our list: whole milk yogurt, lactose free whole milk ( :( ) , bananas, applesauce, mac and cheese fixins' and a couple of Gerber graduates that I know she likes.  Also animal crackers and lil' juice boxes.

I am thinking you are talking about snacks... Little individually wrapped cheeses which my little one loved to snack on, various crackers, applesauce...

Well we are always stocked with cheerios, rick cakes, crackers, and frozen waffles. We usually have bread, so I can make toast and add a bit of jam or peanut butter. We always have instant ramen, so I can easily whip that up, throw in some frozen veggies, and voila a quick meal.

We always have bananas in the house. If not any other fresh fruit, then I will go to our canned peaches, canned pineapple or applesauce.

We always have cheese, and she has never refused this. (We alway have yogurt & she used to love the stuff, but she hasn't really wanted any in recent weeks, guess she's on a yogurt strike)

I'm always stocked with some cans of Creamed Style Corn, so I can heat that up, crack an egg in, mix it real good, and she has something warm and yummy to eat.

We usually have eggs. I'll scramble one with some already cooked veggies (gotta sneak em in ya know) and maybe some cheese.

We have tons of Pizza Rolls in the freezer, but I only give them to her once in a great while. I think she's only had them twice in the past 2 months. Like frozen waffles, it's something to fall back on when I can't give her something "fresh".

When I first read your post I thought you meant as snacks for us! ;D

DD just started to eat foods other than mush and so far LOVES Cheerios. I always make sure I have fresh bananas as these are her fav.

Personally, I have to have Pop Tarts around for myself (strawberry flavour with the colourful icing) ;).

That's what I was thinking: snacks/quick meals for when I'm working.  DH is rather hopeless at cooking.  Eggs are out for another year.   :(    Of course, today she is refusing even her favorites.   (I second the poptarts!!)

Cans of spaghettios

LOL, you've just reminded me that I have several cans of Chef Boyardee type pasta/meat/sauce stuff in the pantry. Forgot about those. Was saving them as back up, but not too helpful if I forget I have them...

What are these?

Oh, I'm in NZ...

But, they are processed meat (97% meat) shaped into fries (we call fries, chips  ;)) and they can be be quick fried in a couple of minutes. I often do these for lunch along with pasta and chopped up veges cooked in the same pot.

Thanks, Nikki, for explaining that to me. Hmmm.. not sure we have an equivalent in the USA.  :-\

Oh, I forgot to add that we've just started on deli meats, so I keep some on hand now. Add it to her pasta/veggies. Of course, she's a smart girl and picks out the "more desirable" ingreds first...  sigh, things were so much simpler when I could just spoon feed her.  ;D

I was thinking the exact same thing yesterday - it was so much easier when DS was an infant and would eat pretty much anything I fed him. Now, it's a struggle to get textured veg and fruit in him. What happened to my easy eater?!

Cheese strings, Yoghurt, raisins, full fruit bowl every day, small tins of fruit (Always offered as a dessert, better than sweets) Baby bells,
Now thaey were the good healthy things that I encourage.
Here are the things that DS nags for at the supermarket, usually gets and usually eats before starting on the above list.
Pepperami, doritos/dips,crisps, rice pudding(individual pots) jelly, jubblies.

I don't buy all the junk he likes, but I do let him have some, then we can compromise sometimes, although his eating is very good so I don't mind little treats.

That's a great idea!  Add some peas which Rory LOVES and I think we've got a great quick dinner winner!
Thanks

We always have:

whole wheat pita bread (Lilah won't eat any other kind of sandwich bread consistently) ::)
mini bagels (she loves these, but won't eat a chunk of a whole bagel) ::)
nut butter and jelly
dried fruit (Lilah loves this; it's like candy to her)-- apricots, cherries, and of course, raisins
whole milk
Greek yogurt (my almost two-year-old is still under 24 lbs, so I getthe really creamy, fat-filled stuff for her)
some type of fresh fruit
fresh veggies, though she really only eats avocado and tomatoes (bot of which are technically fruits anyway)
mac and cheese stuff
rotelle pasta, whole wheat
cheese
calcium-fortified orange juice
eggs
lentils and beans
rice and other grains
frozen veggie sausages (Lilah loves these)

Hey, that's a great idea. I only do the cream style corn with egg, I never throw in anything else, but I love the idea of adding peas. We only keep frozen peas though, and I wouldn't want to throw in a whole bag. Our freezer is extra cold or something cuz our frozen veggie packs are always rock solid. How do you painlessly break of a small chunk? Hitting the bag against the kitchen counter does not work.

DD has starting her picky phase again, not eating much, and not eating much veggies. Sigh. I gave her ravioli with carrots thrown in; she picked out the ravioli and left the carrot bits.  >:(  She's very good at picking out the stuff she likes, leaving the rest or overturning the bowl & dumping what she doesn't like onto the highchair tray.  >:(

Do they?  I haven't seen those yet.  Better be on the lookout; I try to choose whole grains exclusively whenever possible.

Hi Marissa's mum

The creamed corn, egg and peas went down a treat.  Have had it twice and she hoovers so quickly!  I'm thinking leftovers can go in a toasted sandwich...mmm

Is it an old freezer?  We had an ancient one that froze everything like we were in the Antartic.
I reckon you could put peas in smaller, serving sizes in small freezer bags.

Just the cheddar cheese ones, not the other flavors (though I think those are the best anyway) :)

creamed corn/egg

i did as marissa's mum suggested and warmed the creamed corn for a bit then added the egg and mixed it through, i let it cook for a bit and stir again etc until egg is done.

it looks pretty good, like a comfort food. smells great!

For emergencies and easy travel food, we have:
Gerber toddler meat sticks (they have too much salt, in my opinion, for official "toddler" food).
jars of toddler fruit (peaches and apples)

What we always keep in the house:
     bananas
     tomatoes
     broccoli
     green beans
oyster crackers (for a while, he wouldn't eat anything unless it was presented to him on an oyster cracker  ::))
     graham crackers
bread (the kind with extra calcium)--he loves sandwiches
     raisin bread
     Chex cereal
     pancakes

We are lucky, though, as Dave will eat anything now. (hope I don't jinx it)

Glad to hear it. I've got a nice collection of frozen peas & carrots in the freezer now. Buy them whenever they're on sale. DD is starting to show a dislike for veggies at times  >:( , but she  still likes to pick up peas, something about the roundness? Well, whatever works!!!  ;D

Yeah, I guess it's kinda oldish. I never thought about divying the package up before stuffing it in the freezer. Good idea. My mom's freezer is much older, and it it much colder than our freezer. I had a little "accident" with an ice cream scooper because of that. Now don't laugh too hard ... I took out a box of ice cream from her freezer, went to scoop the ice cream into bowls, then proceeded to lick the scooper. Not being very coordinated, I guess , I ended up "mouthing" the scooper in a bad way. I think in my zeal, I just moved the scooper towards my face too quickly.  :-[  Anyways, what ended up happening was the scooper, being excessively cold, got STUCK onto the inner side of my upper lip.  :o And of course I ended up ripping the skin off as I pulled the scooper off.  :o  :o  :(  :'( OUCH!!! That took a hair more that a week to heal, and boy was I miserable! I haven't attempted to lick a scooper since then.  Oh my, I can't believe I'm sharing this embarrassing story...  :o

ok this cream corn egg thing, i dont get it lol... do you heat the creamed corn and then add the egg and stir it to cook like you would scrambled eggs? Does it look gross?

I pour the cream style corn into a pot and heat it up, stirring occasionally. When it's hot, I crack an egg into it. Actually, I crack an egg into a bowl to make sure there aren't any stray shells, then pour the egg into the pot. Keep stirring like scrambled eggs as you said. I guess you can compare it to that Chinese egg drop soup, or is it called egg flower soup? (Geez, I'm Chinese so you'd think I'd know  ;D , but it's really not a soup any Chinese person I know would order at a restaurant)  I just keep stirring the mixture until I feel the egg is cooked (erring on the overcooked side, don't want to give her raw egg you know). It doesn't look gross at all, in fact, you almost don't even notice the egg in the mixture.  DD loves the stuff, just slurps it up, she has never turned it down. And like Charmaine suggested, you can throw is some veggies too!

It's really cute, DD tries to say "egg" now. It comes out more like "eh". But she definitely knows what egg is. She loves it when I scramble an egg for her, of course I also throw in tiny cubes of cooked veggies in it (usually zucchini & carrots). She inhales that stuff too.

Marie - the whole grain goldfish crackers I've found at the regular grocery store (we're in Georgia) - we're also found them in NY/NJ when we lived there.  They actually look a whole lot like the other ones -- the just have a little thing on the package that says "whole grain".

LOL about the ice cream scooper :)

I finally found the whole grain goldfish. I also saw the "calcium" version too. Was trying to decide, do I want "enriched" or whole grain? The calcium one was enriched. I went with the whole grain. We can supplement calcium in other ways, she currently loves cheese and would eat cheese all day if she had her way.
