Title: 8mo's later..and we still don't have this one nap thing fixed:(
Post by: Nicole-Momtomegan on September 25, 2006, 05:23:41 am
Meg just turned 2 on friday:) When we transitioned to one nap at 16mo's her naps got so crappy. let me start by saying that she has been a great sleeper since about 7mo's old after some long torturous sleep training.
in the last 8mo's we have not got  a decent nap out of her consistently.the longest we got a 1hr 45min to 2hr nap was about 4-5 days. Now that she is in a toddler bed her nap is 45min...this is absolutely NOT long enough..tonight we had to put her to bed at 5:45pm b/c she was falling asleep in her highchair:(.(she wakes up crying and fussy which she does not do when she sleeps longer).
I've tried most things i think. and when she wakes early from her nap, I tell her its still nap time and put her back, but not once has she ever fallen back asleep. she was like this a ababy too if she woke early. I tried W2S about 4-5mo's ago with no success.
any OTHER suggestions???mostly I NEED  the break....i'm just feeeling so frustrated. she just turned two and if her nap is 45min now soon she won't be napping at all. in the last week we've only gotten 1 2hr nap out of her. feeling helpless to help her get more sleep.
thanks for your help,
Nicole

I think if I was dealing with a child in a chronically overtired state (and I'm assuming that she is overtired constantly?) - then before you can fix the length of the nap you will need to get her into a rested state imo&e. To do that (which is what I did when DS was switching from 2-1 nap - so a little younger I know) I would make sure he got a catnap later on in the afternoon (so I was able to maintain the normal bedtime to maintain the morning wakeup) even if it meant driving him in the car or walking him in the buggy. That way, once I realised he was well rested (after a week or two), then I could retackle the length of naps - and in fact they lengthened on their own.

I know you've answered this before, Nicole, but what's her schedule? Other than maybe tweaking her schedule, I'm not sure there's much you can do other than what you've already tried. You can't make her sleep - you can only give her the opportunity to sleep.

How late did she sleep the morning after you put her to bed at 5:45pm?

My first two were chronic 90-minuters when they went to one nap.  I agree that keeping bedtime early, as inconvenient as it probably is for you, will get your foot in the door regarding longer naps.

Does she wake at night too?

well, after putting her to bed at 5:45pm yesterday she woke at 9;30pm sick and threw up until midnight. then slept until 5:45am where i had to play with her hair and sing her our bedtime song "I am a child of God" about 4 times lol...then we got up at 7:15am....
anyway, usually her schedule is basically like this
6:45-7:15am wake.
12:15-1:15 to 1:30 ( on a bad day lately only 1pm) nap
7pm bed
i could settle for the 90min nap no problem, but anything less than that is just not enough for her....
she was doing usually 90min until a week ago (about 2.5wks into the toddler bed) she started waking after 45-60min.
any ideas?

What happens if you push her nap back to 12:30-12:45pm?

Hi Nicole!

I remember suggesting you about 2 weeks ago about a modified W2S where you'd be in Nicole's room for the entire nap to figure out what's causing her waking or stopping her to wake at all... did you try that? what did you find if you did?

Also, if she was up for 2+ hour in the middle of the night throwing up, there must be something to come, maybe an illness. I know ds has awful naps when he's sick and sometimes it starts a week before the "true" illness shows up.

How is she doing this week?
