Title: Need help with second birthday gift for ds
Post by: Wilsmon on January 30, 2007, 18:23:51 pm
I was going to get him a teeter totter but ds says since there is such a size difference between ds and dd (6 1/2 yrs) it won't work.  We live in the country and don't have many close neighbors with kids his size/age.  Also, because of living in the country we don't have a lot of sidewalk, mostly gravel and a lot of the ride on toys are hard to use.

I have thought about getting his "big boy bed" even though we won't switch him for hopefully another 6 months or so.  Plus I was kind of wanting that to be part of the big switch - having him help pick it out etc. but I guess he could just pick out the bedding.

He has so much because of his older sister (she was the first grandchild on my husbands side and got spoiled).

I could find plenty of things to get just for the sake of getting but I was hoping to find something a little more worthwhile and that he would use.  His birthday is Feb. 12th.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

How about a sandbox?  We got dd1 (who will be two in March) a sand/water table for Christmas and she LOVES it (even though we haven't even used the water part of it yet).

A kitchen with food and dishes
A spring horse
An adjustable basketball hoop
A "computer"
A work bench with tools
Anything little people

Those are some of the things we've gotten for Henry for his last couple of birthdays and Christmases. HTH!

Thanks for the suggestions, unfortunately we already have ALL of those things!   :o

It is hard when it is your second and the first is 4 1/2 yrs older.  DD has had a lot of birthdays and Christmas's to load up on stuff.  Plus, like I said, she is just S.P.O.I.L.E.D!

I will just keep looking through magazines and on the internet.

Are you in the United States?

How about a MagnaDoodle?
Playdoh?

Yes, we are in the US.  And we have both of those also!  We play with playdo almost everyday (we have several different playsets).  Actually, I vaccumed off the pen for dd Magnadoodle so maybe I could get another one.  He didn't really use it much before the "accident" though.

Any thoughts for outdoor toys?  He has a tricylce from his sister already.  We have a swingset, trampoline, play house and tree tire swing.  He has a Gator (one of those battery powered cars - got it used at a garage sale) and even has a horse.

Dang! maybe I need to just put some money in his college fund and get him a box to play with!

Legos are probably too small.  We have 100 piece big block set.  Any other "construction" type toys any of you would recommend?

What about something to do?  Maybe seasons passes to the zoo or the swimming pool etc.  I know 2 year olds usually get in free but you could by the pass for yourself and then promise him so many trips.  You could make a fun little calendar that would be simple for him to understand.  Then you could cross off the days until you go to the zoo or whatever.  It could help him learn as well about days, weeks and months.  It all depends on your DSs developmental level.  Sometimes I think they can learn much more than we try to teach.  As something to unwrap you could provide a stuffed animal or water wings if it is for swimming.  Then it would be something the whole family could enjoy.

I was just about to say what PP just did.  A special trip somewhere might be fun. Sounds as if your house has all kinds of fun stuff for him.  Maybe let him choose. The Zoo or and Aquarium an amusment park and he can pick something to buy while he's there as part of his gift.

Those are good ideas.  I will have to think abou that.  Problem is we live 3 hrs away from a city that has anything like that.  So it would have to be coupon and I am not sure he will get that.

I am starting to realize that finding that one thing he doesn't have is more for me than for him!  I bought him a $5 "Cars" nightlight the other day I am sure he will be thrilled with.

My babysitter is taking off three weeks first of July and I had thought about taking the kids to an amusement park or Ocean Journey (big "aquarium) for one of those weeks.  Maybe I will just get him a few little things and save my money for that.

does he have the Mr Potato head - especially the 50th anniversary set - we got Liv that for xmas and both girls play together with it.  it has the whole family (mr and mrs potato head and the 2 kids and all their accessories and it all stores in a big plastic mr potato shaped container)  excellent value with endless options for hours of play

lincoln logs - mentioned this on the xmas thread - we don't have them here but they have them in the states and i loved them as a child, building but not with little pieces and you can add in some plastic people and animals and he can create villages etc

The logs and the train set are good ideas - don't have them yet! He loves trains.

Thanks!
